Food and provisions were key to the pioneers of Early California. In early 1849 only one riverboat booked passage on the San Francisco Bay. "The Southern Route"- a ring around from Mission Dolores to Mission Santa Clara and the Mission San Jose-- located in today's Fremont-- was the road taken by 3/4 of our 49'ers. If you came after 1851 you were a follower. . . Then, the country's economy faced a Civil War, the "Ribbon of Rail" that would bind our new country together came in 1869. . .
