Book Description

June 1988
We Followed Odysseus is the story of two legendary sailors--one from the ancient world, the other from today. Set against the backdrop of Homer's great tale, Hal Roth tells the fascinating story of sailing a small boat in the wake of Odysseus. Crossing oceans and seas in pursuit of his goal, Roth, with the help of his wife, Margaret, retraces the voyages of Odysseus along the Turkish coast and the storybook isles of Greece. Then he sails to a desert island in Tunisia, visits Sicily and Corsica, and finally goes to Italy and Malta before returning to Greece. While writing this book back in the U.S., Roth talked to hundreds of people and discovered that though most have heard about Odysseus and the Trojan horse, they have never read The Iliad or The Odyssey

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and education read. Hal is a sailor's sailor., May 22, 1999

This review is from: Always a Distant Anchorage (Paperback)
Using his colorful descriptions and numerous maps, Hal Roth does an exceptional job of painting the picture of cruising. He includes those details and facts that make you feel like you are part of the read. Each chapter is long enought to make it a nightly read before turning in. However, the book is one you will always be ready to pick up. I even carried it in my briefcase, reading it during lunch. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in or already has some crusing experience. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun for landlocked sailors, March 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Always a Distant Anchorage (Paperback)
Informative and fun book, with a great blend of sailing information plus stories of the people and places that Hal and Margaret experienced on their long circumnavigation. This is a book about freedom and exploration. Hal assumes that readers already have a basic knowledge of sailing lingo.

Just finished the book. It's a very good account of a small sailboat and it's trip around the world. A good mix of sailing technique, people they meet and all the joys and problems of a husband and wife taking 4 years to go 30,786 miles.
