4.0 out of 5 stars Great adventure but not a good follow up
I have been waiting since June for this book to come out. The second novel kept me hanging with what happened to Adam and Bo. I thought that this book was a wonderful story on its own but it wasn't a good ending to the initial story. It is worth reading but it doesn't give the satisfying ending that I was hoping for. I still would like to know what happened to Adam and...

2.0 out of 5 stars I Really Wanted To Love This Novel but . . ., November 14, 2004

This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really love Jude Deveraux and quite frankly I've read every novel she's written to date and will mostly likely continue to do so.

But after having enjoyed both "Forever", "Forever and Always", I found myself anxiously awaiting for the finale "Always" but now I find myself at a complete loss, completely confused and just a little angry at prolonging what should have been a great story.

I don't know what to say about "Always". Okay, there are definitely some interesting points in this novel: the time travel, the ghosts encountered along the way, and of course Darci learning more about some of the things she can accomplish with her "special talents". After three novels you mean to tell me that this was it, this is what I've been waiting for?

In "Always" Darci has changed her life as well as her future completely. Is this a good thing? I don't think so.

Exactly what happened to Adam? No answers in this novel.

What about Darci and Adam's children, will they be born?

What about Darci's father, will he marry Adam's sister and have a child?

My conclusion as to how Darci eventually found Adam leads me to believe that all of the events that took place in the previous novels never occurred and none of the events leading up it will never exist so why write three novels when the end result is none of it ever happened.

Always sounds a lot like the Dallas episode when Pam dreamed that Bobby was dead!!!

Furthermore, what of all the characters Darci met along the way from book one to book three, will they just be her memories as none of the characters she encountered will ever have known her.

Sorry Ms. Deveraux, "Always" requires a rewrite. Better luck next time!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not to beat a dead horse..., December 14, 2004
This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
But like many others, I just wasn't that satisfied. I tend to read action, adventure or mysteries. I look to romance because I want something fun, wild and finished! Call me dull, but I like an ending where the two main characters get together, and although in the end that sort of happened, it wasn't what you would expect. I enjoyed the story, up until the last 40 or 50 pages, then things seemed to just move along way to fast. Why take the time to create characters and explore lives if you are just going to warp them up so quickly?

Someone also mentioned, A Knight in Shining Armor. I would also like to see some sort of conclusion there. Just like in this series, it would be nice to see some kind of follow up that shows what happens to Adam and Darci. All in all, I was disappointed with the ending, but I admit that I will stick around to see what Devereux comes up with next.

2.0 out of 5 stars Always & Lacking, April 14, 2005
This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I read the first book and was hungry for more. After the second I was still intrigued. But the third is an utter and total disappointment. I had to make myself continue to read it as it took total concentration to stay interested. I was very disappointed by the writing and pace of the book in general. I like the Darci character and love the romance between her and Adam. I'd like to see a follow up or maybe a spin off about the children.

Overall a disappointment. Not a MUST read but a SHOULD finish if you want to know how the trilogy resolves and ends.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing (potential spoilers), November 24, 2004

This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I've read almost all of Ms. Deveraux's books and the first two books in this trilogy, and waited very impatiently for "Always." I read it the day it was released, and wished I hadn't spent the money on it.
Admittedly, the first part of the book (the first few chapters before the "Big Event" occurs) had a great plot and character interaction, but the plot started to nosedive about 1/3 into the story. Maybe this is personal taste, but I've read other books in which half the story occurs in one time period, and the other part happens elsewhen--and that twist just didn't work here!
Also I think that what is unfortunately often true of trilogies happened here--very poor character development. The main male character here started out great, then abruptly started to exhibit behavior that seemed totally inconsistent with the personality the author had originally described.
I love most of Jude Deveraux's numerous books, and I especially love paranormal romantic fiction, but this book jumped around so much that I couldn't "get into" it. The flow of the story didn't even seem consistent with the first very entertaining books. And the last chapter was completely devoid of any emotional investment--I finished the book thinking, "Why did we even need the other books?"
In general, the story and plot twists, while original, did not seem consistent with Ms. Deveraux's style. I'd be very surprised if most of her fans liked this book.
I respect Ms. Deveraux's artistic freedom, but I think many romance authors who become really popular start to depend on reputations to sell books, and the qualities that made their first books so incredible just fall by the wayside. I think that is what happened with this series--it was pretty much guaranteed that people were going to buy it, so who cared if it was good? Can anyone say "Matrix Revolutions"?

1.0 out of 5 stars "Always" by Jude Deveraux, April 11, 2005
This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I love to read romance, especially science fiction/fantasy romance, and I'm easy to please, so a book has to be really bad for me NOT to find at least one redeeming feature. This, however, has got to be the worst, most convoluted story I've ever read. I've never written a review before and I hate for my first one to be so negative, but I wanted to prevent someone else from wasting their time and money on this garbage. Are all of Miss Deveraux's novels this bad?

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh Please, November 11, 2004
This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been a fan of many of Ms. Deveraux's books, but this one was so bad - I'm sorry, but the ending was horrid! That's all I can say about it - it's just not worth it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, November 7, 2004

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was really let down by this book. I am an avid Jude Deveraux reader and usually snap up her books as soon as they come out. I loved the first book in this series and the second was "ok", but this one left me confused and feeling that HUGE holes were left open. Where is/was Adam? Why was he taken? Where is the gripping story of finding and rescuing him as so many other Devereaux heroines in the past have done? I don't want to give away the ending to anyone, but I felt that this ending was extremely unsatisfiying and a huge cop-out on the part of the author. Jude, how could you?

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed, December 14, 2004
This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I am always looking forward to new Jude Deveraux books but I was disappointed with this one, and the whole series in general. Personally, I think that the story could have ended after the first book. The rest of it was unnecessary. But the thing that really bothered me was the ending. I'm not really a believer in the whole psychic thing but the quick reason as to why she got her powers totally seemed out of left field. And to me, that ruined it all.
I can't help but wonder if she is now going to write another story about how Darci and Adam get together again. Just like I wondered if there would be at least a short story about Douglas and Reed from Knight in Shining Armor. I understand not having that leaves it up to your imagination but if I am paying for a book to entertain me, I don't want to leave everything up in the air.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Ending, November 9, 2004
This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
I snatched up this book and was so excited to finally find out what happened to Adam and Bo. The novel is actually a good read, but has very little to do with saving Adam and Bo. I have never been more let down by the ending to any book. I love Jude Deveraux's writing and was extremely disappointed that she didn't tie up the loose ends. What an incredible let down! Even in the foreword she chastises her fans and tells us to believe in her. Yet the ending was terrible. Honestly, I shouldn't of given her 1 star.

2.0 out of 5 stars YIKES, what the heck just happened, July 18, 2006

Judith Agee (SmallTown, Indiana USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Always (Forever Trilogy) (Mass Market Paperback)
This final installment of the Trilogy: Forever and Forever and Always was a major disappointment. Both previous novels were fun and fluid reading. With characters you got to know and care about.
And most importantly, you knew what was going on!
This is a disaster of a book. It is simply all over the place and leads to nowhere.
Ms. Deveraux and her publishing house goofed. Their theme song must be "What was I thinking".
If you invested your reading time in the first two, probably like me you will make yourself read to the end of ALWAYS to see what happens. But, when you do get to the end, you still won't know what happens, or if you do, heh, you won't know you do.
And if you found that last sentence confusifying, wait till you read the book.
How many stars signify a feeling of What the heck just happened?
