Book Description

Jukeboxes can "touch" you emotionally. Emotional response may be expensive. It is possible to pay several times more than a jukebox is worth. I did when I bought my first jukebox. The prices in this guide will help you avoid such extravagance.

If you want to buy a collectible jukebox, this guide will help you determine how much to pay. Jukeboxes start out expensive, get used for a few years and become almost worthless. After 20 or so years some become collectible and after 35 years a few become prized museum pieces.

Jukeboxes never really wear out unless left out. They are engineered as commercial units and are maintained by pros on a regular schedule. Jukeboxes are usually retired because of outmoded styling or obsolete technology. When a jukebox is retired it ends up in someone's home. It plays for a few years, is ignored for a few years and then spends a few years in the garage. Eventually it is sold to a dealer or collector or given to charity and begins a new life. Postwar jukeboxes are seldom "scrapped".

When buying "My First Jukebox" it is easiest to buy from a reputable dealer. Check the Yellow Pages and go take a look. If you have the dreaded "Collector Gene" this first purchase may lead to more jukeboxes. Some people have over a hundred jukeboxes, many over a score. If you do not succumb to Jukebox Fever, you will have a nice jukebox and someone to fix it. In a decade or so, when you tire of it, you will be able to get your money back even accounting for inflation.

If you are the "Prospector" type, you can advertise "Jukebox Wanted" in local papers and see what turns up. And, of course, read the Hobby Mag ads and go kick a few wheels. Buying this way is like buying a car from a private party: you are on your own.

A good way to buy a jukebox is at one of the many jukebox shows. At the shows all of the above applies with at least two added buyer advantages:
1. there is real competition to sell
2. there are many Jukeboxes

Although you have a price guide, the seller might not know the value of their jukebox. This can be good and it can be bad: sellers sometimes think their abominable jukebox is worth $25,000. Save yourself a trip by calling first and asking questions; especially, "How much do you want for it?"

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for any one interested in jukeboxes!, May 14, 1999
This review is from: Always Jukin: Official Guide to Collectible Jukeboxes (Paperback)
What a great resource! This book is fulled with pictures, history and information; all designed to give the novice and the expert a true and futher appreciation of jukeboxes. Mike Baute has done an exceptional job of combining technical and informative context in one comprehensive guide. However, Amazon buyers beware!!! The price guide was not included in my shipment...however I called Mike, and he graciously sent me a price guide, a free copy of his newsletter and a nice note. His generosity and prompt attention to my request has made me even more enthusiastic about this book and the world of jukeboxes. If you have the opportunity, subscribe to the Always Jukin' newsletter...trust me, you won't be sorry! Buy this book, subscribe to Mike's newsletter and support a great resource. Once you buy the book...watch out! You will become a collector in no time!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Price Guide Should Be, November 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Always Jukin: Official Guide to Collectible Jukeboxes (Paperback)
This book not only has all the regular features you expect in a comphrehesive, expert 'Last Word & The Word' by the world's leading Jukebox history & price student, but it even features a free yearly price update, so it never becomes obsolete. Considering how many of this book were printed & how few people in the world care about the Price of a used Jukebox, it is a good thing some price update was built into the formula: the print run will last at least 10 years & in that time the prices will be all over the chart. The author of this book is a genius. If you have even the slightest interest in Jukeboxes, you will be glad to have this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best up to date jukebox guide, a must for all jukers!, January 20, 1999

Fast Eddie (Washington, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Always Jukin: Official Guide to Collectible Jukeboxes (Paperback)
This book is much more than just a "Price Guide". It is a great review of just about all jukeboxes out there, and a REALISTIC value guide. The author did his homework, and the writing shows it. It is easy to read, very entertaining, lots of pictures, and full of info that any jukebox fan will find very valuable. It is a fantastic reference, I have worn one out, and am on my second. The best way there is to learn about jukes, which ones to lust for, and which to leave down in the dark basement where you found it. Buy it, you won't be sorry!
