Always On My Mind,
By Mike Kurosky (Ft. Worth, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Always on My Mind (Audio CD)
This album is definitely for the avid fan like myself that must have everything. Even though most of the tracks may be found elsewhere including the new box sets it is the quality of this album that stands out. The the song Bitter They Are Hareder They Fall to my dismay was not included on the 70's box set but it may be found on this compilation and the original album From Elvis Presley Boulevard which to date has not been digitally remastered so the sound is much better on this compilation as it is with Hurt and It's Midnight.

from the opening lines of of "seperate ways" to the closing notes of "always on my mind", you will not be disapointed with this Elvis cd. if you are like me and use music as a temporary escape from the troubles of everyday life, then this cd is for you. the king's heart felt performance on "hurt" is worth the purchase price alone! if you are an Elvis fan and do not have this cd you are truely missing out!

With the many music offerings available as of May of 1999, I feel this CD is still the best opportunity to date to own a collection of some of Elvis' "70's Very Best" (representing his later work). This CD offers an articulate compilation of his later 70's music with a mastery of redigitalization in sound! It proves how dynamic Elvis's music was during this period! Having been an Elvis fan since his public introduction on theTommy & Jimmy Dorsey show, I have been followeing his Music and life ever since. I consider this CD to be one of the best available representing his performance heights in the 1970's. It's "very close" to being in the audience while he sang during his 70's concerts! Excellent Album By Elvis of the 70's,
By
This review is from: Always on My Mind (Audio CD)
I bought this album on cassette in 1986 and I still listen to it.
These recordings are a testimony to the power of his voice. His live version of Unchained Melody is absolutely awesome!! The songs are mostly country-type songs, but his voice and emotion in each song really prove that he still had it when he made these recordings. Elvis could have definitely made the transition to country and he could have kept his appeal. I wish that he had become more of a country music performer during the 70's. If he could have found good songs to record, maybe a renewal of his recording career could have inspired him to overcome his problems. I was blown away by this album in 1986 and I still am today.

This is a collection of sad ballads recorded by Elvis between 1969 and 1977. After his marriage broke up, Elvis was drawn to material that reflected what was happening in his personal life. So, he recorded a lot of songs about the end of a relationship. An example of this is "Hurt", where he sings, "You said our love was true and we'd never ever part. Now you love someone new and it breaks my heart.". When he gets to the recitation part where he says, "Yes, darling, I'm so hurt, because I still love you so.", you can tell that he really means it. But wasn't it Elton John who said, "Sad songs say so much."? Listening to this CD will give you an idea of what was going through Elvis' mind during the last years of his life.

Not a bad introduction to some of Elvis's classic late 60's & 70's ballads but if you can afford it buy the 70's Masters "Walk a Mile in my Shoes" It is excellent, 10 out of 10.Best value Elvis you will ever buy,as all the tracks have been remastered. The tracks on this CD have not.

Elvis in the seventies,
By
This review is from: Always on My Mind (Audio CD)
This compilation, originally released in the mid-eighties, offers a selection of hits and album tracks that Elvis recorded towards the end of his life. The title track is probably now the most famous among the Elvis hits featured here. Don't cry Daddy (a real tear-jerker) and My boy (a translation of a French song originally recorded by Claude Francois) were also huge hits for Elvis in the seventies.
This set includes covers of Solitaire (written by Neil Sedaka but a hit for both Andy Williams and the Carpenters), Bitter they are harder they fall (a country song by Larry Gatlin), Hurt (a huge sixties pop hit for Timi Yuro), You gave me a mountain (a Marty Robbins country song) and the standard Unchained melody. Separate ways, Pieces of my life, I miss you, It's midnight and I've lost you are all great songs worthy of their place in this compilation, first released on vinyl, but later on CD too. Even the CD edition is long out of print, because people expect more tracks on Elvis compilations these days. Still, one cannot deny the quality of the music here. If you haven't got these tracks, you might consider buying if you can pick up a used copy cheaply.

An Album That Speaks to Your Heart,
By Liz "LoftyKitten" (Springfield, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Always on My Mind (Audio CD)
When I was twelve years old I chanced to hear the song "Don't Cry Daddy" on the radio, for the first and only time. While that may not be the most loved Elvis song, I related to it at the time, and put a lot of time into tracking it down on CD. At the time I had never heard any of the other songs on this album (with the exception of Unchained Melody by other artists). Over the years, having gone through the heartaches of growing up, I appreciate this album so much more.Elvis was an incredibly talented and gifted man, and I cherish this CD. While I do love all Elvis music, including his more upbeat hits, the tracks on this album are really something special. They are deeper than his previous work, and he really expresses raw emotion and pain very beautifully. This album is a must have for the collection of any Elvis fan, but even the casual listener can find enjoyment here. The music is slow and easy to relax to, and whenever I'm feeling hurt or sad about something, popping this in and singing along is a nice release. |
