The U.S. Coast Guard conducts maritime security, safety, homeland security, military duties in time of war, ice operations, and many other duties that sometimes go unnoticed. 1.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment., February 12, 2006

This review is from: Always Ready: The U.S. Coast Guard (Power) (Paperback)
I am a Coast Guard officer and have been a part of this organization for over ten years now. I recently read "Always Ready...Today's U.S. Coast Guard," and was thoroughly disappointed. Excluding the introduction written by Admiral Collins, this book is chocked full of erroneous information and ridiculous mistakes. It becomes painfully obvious early on that the authors were more interested in capitalizing on the public's interest in the Coast Guard sparked by September 11th, than they were in taking the time to do the appropriate research. My advice would be to have the book edited by someone (preferably someone with some knowledge of the Coast Guard) before it goes into its next print. Since so many people know very little about what the Coast Guard does, it is important that books like this at least make an honest attempt at accuracy. One of my favorite examples of the carelessness with which this book was written and edited was a photo of a large tanker in the port of Long Beach that had its name misspelled in the caption, even though the correct spelling could be seen on the bow of the vessel itself.
