5.0 out of 5 stars WonderFul! Wonderful! Wonderful!!!!
I loved it! I cried during it and I couldn't put it down! This is a story of a man's beliefs, a belief that gives him nothing but scorn and hatred. But despite this he refuses to lay the blame and remains completly devoted to his family, even though they too, question his bravery. 3.0 out of 5 stars Beta Hero Romance with Too Many Misunderstandings
I guess I am the odd (wo)man out. I love good stories of beta heroes and Clayton is definitely a beta hero. Clayton Holland was drafted on the Confederate side of the Civil War, except he didn't believe in war. He returns to his hometown and a brother who hates him. For some reason, unknownst to me at the time of reading the book, he can't talk to his brother and explain...

But despite this he refuses to lay the blame and remains completly devoted to his family, even though they too, question his bravery. Isn't it a wonder, that the man they thought a coward, in the end, shamed them with his courage? But there are things he doesn't tell, nightmares that remain his guilty secrets that make this novel a true treasure. The woman, his dead best friend's wife, learns to rise beyond her hatred and look beneath Clayton's quiet exterior and see the sensitive and gentle man within. I can't say enough good things about Always To Remeber. But I will say one more thing, it ended to soon!!

Anyone who has ever had to take a stand on principle, whether popular or unpopular, can identify with both of the main characters in this book. I loved both characters and the theme of the book was supported beautifully by Meg and Clay. These days, more than ever, there are so many issues affecting us all that we must take a stand on, and this book does a wonderful job of showing how "pack" thinking can be overcome by personal committment. The story itself is engrossing and Ms. Heath drew me into the lives of the characters as if they were real people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy -- this book is written with remarkable skill !!, November 20, 2003

This review is from: Always to Remember (Paperback)
Ms. Heath has such an intriguing style of writing. She provides the story's insight much the way sugar runs through a sieve -- a little at a time. The author filters and dispenses the data quietly, thus holding and developing the reader's interest. This is writing genius -- to keep the reader wanting.

Here Lorraine Heath is in her element -- Texas after the civil war. The solemn story of a peaceful boy mutated into a lonely man through the demonic course of war. The touching tale of a town's unforgiving hatred to a man whose only sin was his conviction. Heath skillfully thrusts the reader into this hate and anxiety, making the reader stop and wonder what their own responses and opinions would be in a similar situation. Intimidating reflection!

This is romance -- a slow blossoming story. Hate gives way to love. Inhumanity gives way to understanding. With great care, Heath cultivates the characters. By the end of the book, the reader recognizes these ordinary people. Currently this book is unpublished, but please do try to find a copy. You will have no regrets.

I love Lorraine Heath. Its hard to find another author that can create such tender, masculine heroes. Wow, Clay really is perfectly suited to this role. He was so sweet and unsure, yet undeniably masculine. I adored him. I enjoyed Meg as well... but Clay, to me, was the main attraction here. This is a quietly romantic book. It doesnt hit you over the head ,but sneaks up on you and worms its way in until you cant set it down. It is full of some of the sweetest, smallest, most genuine moments. I cant tell you how much I enjoyed this and I highly recommnd it.

This review is from: Always to Remember (Paperback)
I've read historical romance for 20 years now, and ALWAYS TO REMEMBER is one of the _very_ best of it's genre! Incredibly gut-wrenching and emotional. Really makes you question your own strengths and weaknesses. 5 stars is not enough for this book!

This review is from: Always to Remember (Paperback)
This is definitely a keeper. Clay's sooo sweet and sensitive, yet quietly courageous and steadfast in his believes that it made me cry my eyes out reading about his sufferings and secret pain. He is definitely one of my favorite heroes. I couldn't put this book down! And I'm sure it's going to stay in my heart for years and years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captures your heart, October 31, 1997

This review is from: Always to Remember (Paperback)
Lorraine Heath's story of courage, pain, and love seared my soul. The characters, especially Clayton, touched my heart and made me ache to comfort them. Clay is incredibly brave and unfailingly devoted to his family, his beliefs, and honoring his dead friend in a quite and heartwrenchingly dedicated manner. He has always loved Meg, but is sure that Meg, nor any woman would want him. Yet, his capacity to love does not turn him bitter, but determined to share his gift of sculpture to honor the memories of the towns confederate dead. Meg thinks to show him what she believes is his cowardice in refusing to fight for "the cause". But Meg learns that his courage is greater because he suffers in silence. I fell in love with Clay and I thank Ms. Heath for sharing her gift of bringing these characters into my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best, July 30, 2000
By
Deanna Chesnut (Austin Texas USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Always to Remember (Hardcover)
Out of thousands of romances I've read, Clay and Meg are the most finely crafted characters of all. I just reread this book, for at least the 6th time, and fell in love again with these vividly portrayed characters who grow and evolve throughout the book. I cried for Clay and Meg and, even though I usually dislike kids in books, laughed at the funny, wise and sensitive twins. There isn't a sentence in this book that is wasted in presenting the ever increasing tension of the plot, and every character is so real, they come off the page. Five stars aren't enough for this beautiful tale of post Civil War endings and beginnings. It wasn't marketed well, and I see it is out of print in paperback. Search it out at the used book stores, it is well worth the trip.

This was truly a great book. It was tender story of love and redemption with brilliantly written characters. Clay is one of those characters who will stick with you for quite some time. I love that.
