Book Description

October 1, 2000 The Helen Rose Scheuer Jewish Women's Series
In the tradition of her critically acclaimed memoir of her mother, A Cross and a Star, Marjorie Agosin writes the life of her father, Moises Agosin, a doctor, scientist, and classical pianist whose life reflects the lives of so many Jews of his generation, who were destined to be always refugees, always "others"—always from somewhere else.
In Always From Somewhere Else, Agosin’s homage to her father becomes much more than a simple life story; it is a captivating and moving meditation on the boundaries of national and cultural identities, the meanings of exile and home, and the legacies of storytelling, memory, and love.
"In this beautifully composed tribute to the life of her father, Marjorie Agosín first describes the flight of her grandparents, Abraham and Raquel from the war-ravaged and increasingly anti-Semitic Russia of 1917. They lived as refugees in Istanbul and Marseilles, where Moisés was born, before settling with their three sons in Quillota, Chile. In vivid detail, Agosín contrasts the beauty of the Chilean countryside with the ugliness of the entrenched anti-Semitism that made her father a permanent outsider. . . . Agosín paints a moving portrait of a man who, despite his love for his family, his work, and classical music, was, like herself, marked at the core of his identity as a wandering exile."—Publishers Weekly
"This is a haunting work of extraordinary grace and depth."—Claribel Alegria
Marjorie Agosín is author of many volumes of poetry, fiction, and essays. She is winner of the Letras do Oro Prize and the Latino Literature Prize, and is chair of the Spanish department at Wellesley College.

From Publishers Weekly

"Journeys for Jews are like textures of memories," writes Chilean poet Agosin (A Cross and a Star: Memoirs of a Jewish Girl in Chile) in this beautifully composed tribute to the life of her father, Moises Agosin (b. 1922), a volume in the Helen Rose Scheuer Jewish Women's Series. In tracing the story of Moises, who is an internationally known research scientist specializing in parasitology, the author first describes the flight of her grandparents, Abraham and Raquel, from the war-ravaged, increasingly anti-Semitic Russia of 1917. They lived as refugees in Istanbul and Marseilles, where Moises was born, before settling with their three sons in Quillota, Chile. In vivid detail, Agosin contrasts the beauty of the Chilean countryside with the ugliness of the entrenched anti-Semitism that made her father a permanent outsider. Stigmatized as the sole Jewish child in his public school, he moved to Santiago for his medical training in the 1940s, only to discover that many of his professors and students were pro-Nazi. Despite his distinguished career, he was barred from influential university positions. In 1968, the Agosin family moved to the U.S., where Moises was treated professionally as a Latino interloper. Agosin paints a moving portrait of a man who, despite his love for his family, his work and classical music, was, like herself, marked at the core of his identity as a wandering exile, always spiritually and historically from somewhere else. From Library Journal

Americans know very little about Jewish life in Latin America. Agosin's memoir of her father, renowned scientist Moses Agosin, will help redress the balance. Agosin's previous book, A Cross and a Star: Memoirs of a Jewish Girl in Chile (Univ. of New Mexico, 1995), told the story of her mother's life in a town with only three Jewish families. Here she recalls her father's family, the only Jewish family in Quillota, a city outside Santiago. The Agosins, who endured anti-Semitism as well as the effects of the repressive pre-Allende government, have lived in the United States since 1968, and Agosin includes thoughtful insight into the differences between Chilean and American culture. Agosin, a prize-winning writer, poet, human rights activist, and Spanish professor at Wellesley College, infuses her language with lyricism and poetic imagery that helps the reader become part of the physical and emotional landscape in which this memoir is set. This review is from: Always from Somewhere Else: A Memoir of My Chilean Jewish Father (The Helen Rose Scheuer Jewish Women's Series) (Hardcover)
Agosin creates yet another beautiful piece of literature in "Always from Somewhere Else." Her emotional and thought-provoking style provides the reader with an incredible inside view of Jewish life in Chile. A duet of pain and beauty, Agosin's memoir of her father's life is vivid and alive. This story, one of lost and newfound identity has the strong possibility of being close to us all. This book is a definite candidate for everyone's personal library of favorites.
