Does what it sets out to do, January 4, 2010
This review is from: I Always Tell the Truth (Even If I Have To Lie To Do It!): Stories from the Adirondack Liars' Club (Paperback)
This is a small and gentle book that can be enjoyed like a warm stew on a cold night. On the other hand, it's funny as all get-out.
It's been sitting on my bookshelf for years, maybe decades (the copyright is 1990)! I just noticed it the other night and decided to read it at last. What a treasure had been "buried" in broad daylight. It's a selection of very short tales meant to be told around a woodstove by woodsmen and hunters -- each tale "taller" than the last.
What's even better is that the actual tale-tellers are pictured and described by the editor, who is one herself, I gather, although not represented as such in this volume. In fact, to my surprise and ever-so-vague memory, several of their photographic portraits are autographed. I must have purchased this after attending an actual meeting of the Adirondack Liars' Club in upstate New York. It's all beginning to come back to me now ...
