3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
I enjoyed the characters, and his writing style. The storyline is refreshing, set against a political backdrop. Engaging and well-crafted. I would recommend.

Always is Timmothy B. McCann's second novel and it's AweSum! The main character is Henry Louis Davis the second, a black man fulfilling his childhood dream of running for president in the 2000 election. As a teenager, Henry knew he wanted to be the US President. His high school sweetheart, Cheryl, supported and encouraged him to pursue his dream. Henry planned his whole life to be the president: the schools he attended, the activities he participated in, the jobs he selected, even the woman he married. His whole life centered on the goal of the presidency. Along the way he has triumphs, temptations, setbacks, and the love and support of a woman who loves him.

Always is a love story. It's about the love you think will be "for Always;" the love that turns out to be "for Always;" and what you do in the meantime. It's about having to work for love to last Always, and the pain that the possibility of losing that Always love brings. It's about balancing individual hopes and dreams with love and relationships. It's about finding out what is really important to you, and hoping when you get "it" that you have your "for Always" love there to share it with you.

I look forward to more novels from Timm McCann!

5.0 out of 5 stars Always and Forever, July 26, 2000
By

This review is from: Always (Paperback)
The year 1968. Otis' Dock of the Bay resonated melodiously in eardrums, from the grave; Rosemary's little bundle of joy scared the be-jeez-us out of folks, at the box-office; the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. took a bullet on a balcony, for his people;and, in author Timmothy B. McCann's latest masterpiece, "Always", Henry Louis Davis II and Cheryl Anne Allen forged their love thang as youngsters. Jump ahead to 2000, the Similac is off their breaths, they're grown-ups, and Henry has the opportunity on election night of becoming the first Black President of the US of A (choke on that David Duke), and Cheryl's watching with more than a passing interest. The years have found Henry married, to Leslie, and Cheryl still in flicker mode (fired up for Henry, y'all). Where does the three-way romance end--buy the book. Repeat after me slowly ...buy ...the ...book (Say it three times in your mirror and a Fed Ex truck will magically appear outside your door with the book, and need of credit card info of course). If you read "Until..." then you know that McCann is one of the best at taking love and exploring all of it's myriad outcomes---from recited wedding vows to the proverbial 'clean his toilet with his toothbush, girl'--McCann will take you there like some 70's high. You'll laugh, you'll cry. Bottom line, McCann's work satisfies like a six pack of Gatorade on the Sun. Skills with the pen and pad, McCann.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Life--in the Political Arena, August 10, 2000
This review is from: Always (Paperback)
Timm McCann gets better with each book. I was enthralled with Always from the first page. What impressed me most was the creative way he wove the story together, giving us a behind the scene look at each of his characters. He took a big chance in writing Always, and I believe is was totally successful. The mark of a great writer is to step out and stretch your wings, do the unexpected and still come out with a great story. This is what Timm McCann did with Always. We can emphathize with each of the characters and their plights. Though we may never run for higher office or have aspirations of being President, the down-to-earth emotions and situations that ran through each of his characters is something that all of us can understand. What do you do when the one you've vowed to love "Always" returns? Is it possible to ever find that "other" love, that "Forever" love? Timm McCann proves that it's possible, and answers the age-old question: When you are given the choice of success or forever happiness, what will YOU choose to do?

Kudos, Timm, on a job well done. Always is a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars EJD HAD IT RIGHT, July 25, 2000
This review is from: Always (Paperback)
"Always" proves it. A daring premise -- a black candidate running for the presidency on the eve of election night, I wasn't certain if Mr. McCann could pull it off. Not only did he make you believe the story, his characters are written in such a way that you feel like you are right there in the story with them.

I found myself laughing with them, crying with them and hoping for them. The dynamics of their lives were well drawn and skillfully revealed. Just when I thought I knew what was coming next, I got surprised. Full of twists and the unexpected this book hits you with a one/two punch. Emotionally well written, thoroughly engaging, I found myself drinking in the pages in one long satisfying gulp. Literarily, this book is on a whole different level than most of the current AA fiction. Filled with moments in real history, there's no doubt Mr. McCann did his homework.

It was nice picking up a book that wasn't about "hittin it and quitin' it", where the characters were drawn with real lives and real emotions, where you cared about all them and felt as if you knew them. Congratulations Mr. McCann. Eric Jerome Dickey was right on the money when he said you were 'standing head and shoulders above the rest'. Keep up the excellent work and stay blessed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always, October 30, 2000
This review is from: Always (Paperback)
I read "Always" and I was thoroughly pleased with Mr. McCann's novel. It was fresh, interesting, and very romantic. His characters are phenomenal; they remain true to character throughout the book, without being predictable. If you like E.Lynn, O.Tyree, and other African-American male writers, you will love Timmothy McCann even more. He moves so far from the usually and puts a believable, romantic twist to his writing. Best book I've read all year...and I read a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars What would it Profit a Man to Gain the World...., July 25, 2000
This review is from: Always (Paperback)
If you enjoyed Until, you will be sure to enjoy Always. Timm sucessfully tries something a little different. Its a love story with a twist. Sit back and enjoy, you will find love, suspense, romance and an exciting election. Its the year 2000, and Henry Louis Davis III is running for president of the Untied States. Its a tight 3 way race, and each race has significant firsts. This story is about Henry, his wife Leslie and Cheryl, Henry's first love watching the election results from 3 different places and reflecting on how they got to where they are now. Starting in 1968, when Henry and Cheryl meet, Henry decides he will be president of the United States, to where they are now November 2000.Timm takes the reader back to the past and then brings them to the present, without missing a beat. Not only is this a trip down memory lane, but the suspense of the election is a page turner. There is politics, but this is not a political book. Henry first and foremost is a romantic. His wife has skeltons and so does Cheryl. You will have to read it to find out more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Until ... Always ... Forever ... WHATEVER, Timm is brillant!, August 15, 2000
By
This review is from: Always (Paperback)
With Always, Timmothy McCann threw his hat into the political arena and I voted for him all the way! With perfect powerful precision he recalls dates, details and my head swam as he had Senator Henry Louis Davis II of Florida run for the presidency of the United States. This book felt so much like real life it was like the events were actually happening today, unfolding before my very eyes.

Leslie was devoted and so much in love my own heart rejoiced and ached for her. Timmothy paints a vivid picture of the wife of a successful, driven politician and at times it wasn't pretty. But Leslie's tenacity -- her love -- was poignant and oh so strong.

All I can say is this book is incredible! Fast-paced and powerful, believeable and filled with possibilities. Politics is a rough and tumble game and Timmothy packs a wollop of a punch with this novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing, July 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Always (Paperback)
Simply amazing.

After reading Until... I expected Always to be Until... part two although the excerpt promised something a little different. I see most authors tend to write the same type of books over and over again, but Timmothy has reversed the trend. And although I loved Until... Always is even better.

I will not tell you the story line (because I hate when people do that on Amazon) but if you like suspense and romance you will love Always. If you like a story that will not insult your intelligence you will love Always. If you would like a story that explores the possibilities you will love this book . . . Always.

Of all the male authors out there, Timmothy is personally my favorite. This is not to say that I do not enjoy the other brothers and sisters out there making their dreams come true and enriching our lives but In Until... and Always he has shown me that he has the right stuff.

My only problem is that now I will have to wait for a year for this authors latest work. Keep pushing the envelope Timmothy and we will continue to support!
