Editorial Reviews

Born in Perth, Australia, Grace Woodroofe is about to take the music scene by storm. The indie-blues chanteuse's demo was placed in the capable hands of Ben Harper, by none other than the late great Heath Ledger, and it was love at first listen. Ben Harper quickly led her into the studio, and the debut self titled album was born. With a live show described by the LA Weekly as 'powerful, dynamic and striking', Grace has spent the last two years perfecting her live show. She was recruited by Harper to open for his North American tour in 2009, and has played many a festival, including Byron Bay's own East Coast Blues and Roots Festival and Perth's Ellington Jazz Festival. With a deep, honeyed huskiness, Grace creates amazing tales of life, youth, love and death. She is wise beyond her years; with stage presence of a seasoned performer. In the words of Mr. Ben Harper himself, 'You are not going to believe this girl'.

Discovered by the late Heath Ledger, Aussie singer Woodroofe debuts strongly with Always Want. The first two tracks lead the innocent listener down a Norah Jones trail. "I've Handled Myself Wrong" is a quiet admission of mistakes, but "Battles" brings to life the poignancy that can accompany such admissions, as a middle-aged waitress views herself through the eyes of her daughter. Then "Transformer" sparks an angrier blues, with drums and fuzz bass beating the walls to get out. On "Bear," the claws come out, as Woodroofe threatens a love who "got too close." Through it all, in a smoky delivery that mixes the aforementioned Jones with bits of Macy Gray, Annette Peacock, and Bird York, Woodroofe maintains a collected, bluesy cool, no matter how edgy her bandmates get. Even the title track stays true to its vibes-and-bass foundation, despite constant, almost random, bursts of drum-and-bass, like slasher flashbacks in a love scene. Always Want is irresistible, late-night noir that keeps you up.

Sounds like Fiona Apple with a nice jazzy alto and unexpected chord changes. Can't wait to hear more from this artist.

A friend of mine brought over Grace Woodroofe's cd after seeing her open for Ben Harper recently. I wasn't sure what to expect, and was impressed by what I heard. Grace has a beautiful voice and writes heart stopping songs. Recommended.
