I lack the insatiable desire for Daniel Johnston that many of his fans still somehow possess. I guess I find myself more in the camp of folks that loved his fragile home recordings and sort of allowed him to fall of the radar some time ago. However, upon seeing his name I still get a gushy feeling inside and after listening to his new album it makes me want to re-listen (or in many cases, grant a first listen) to much of his back catalogue. The melodies and highly specific song interests seem so fresh that they must have always been there, not so deeply buried beneath the more produced albums he's been cranking out. Although the first track makes me most nostalgic, the remaining album isn't quite as adherent to his previous sonic stylings. However, once through the door, I definitely felt confident in closing it behind me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freaking Amazing!, October 6, 2009
This review is from: Is and Always Was (Audio CD)
No doubt about it, Daniel Johnston is a living legend. It's been a while, but his last few studio albums really haven't lived up to the greatness of Johnston's story. Is and Always Was is amazing! So cool to hear the full band and studio production along with Daniel Johnston's songwriting and unique lyrics. "Queenie The Doggie" is hilarious and catchy and moving at the same time. "Freedom" rocks. "Light of Day" is epic. All good and highly recommended if you are either a longtime fan or a newbie to Johnston's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Come On Daniel...!?!, October 12, 2009

Of course, we all love Daniel Johnston. Is and Always Was does NOT disappoint.
But Daniel, how did you let one of your greatest songs ever (Lost in My Infinite Memory) get so... well, over produced!? This music does not capture the tone of the song at all. On Daniels most recent tour, he opens with that song. It almost makes you want to cry its so sad, yet beautiful. The music on the album version doesnt fit the song, but not only that, doesnt fit Daniel Johnston.

Whoever it was that got their hands on that song, should have left it alone to be done in that raw Daniel Johnston way...

This may seem like a negative review. It isnt! If you havent already, add this album to your Daniel collection. Its better than many. Mind Movies, Queenie the Doggie, High Horse, Freedom, Tears, of course Lost in My Infinite Memory are all some of the best of Daniels recent songs.

But then again, most all Daniels songs are the best!

Milwaukee loves you Daniel!!!
