3.0 out of 5 stars Alzheimer's Association Presents the Big Brain Puzzle Book
I was surprised and a bit disappointed at the difficulty level of the puzzles in this book. Since Alzheimer's was part of the title, I somehow thought the puzzles would be geared more toward elderly people. I bought it for my 87-year-old mother-in-law and I doubt she will be able to do many of them, even though she was sharp as a tack and an accountant all of her life...

I bought it for my 87-year-old mother-in-law and I doubt she will be able to do many of them, even though she was sharp as a tack and an accountant all of her life. The book is great if you are still normal in all your faculties and want something to challenge you mentally.

"The BIG Brain Puzzle Book", by Terry Stickels, is a puzzlers' delight. It has three levels of difficulty with seven different types of puzzles. The types are; creative thinking (thinking outside the box), mathematics (computational skills), logic (analysis and deduction), language (definitions, usage, and sentence structure), visual (observation, spatial reasoning and pattern recognition), wordplay (word and letter manipulation), and knowledge (book smarts and memory).

The book's cover says "over 200 puzzles that make you think," and that it does! Also, the book comes with the answers and many of the answers have brief explanations, so you can understand how to solve them. This really comes in handy when you go to level 2. I am not a big puzzler, with cryptograms being my favorite, but some of these I have not seen before. Others were new takes on old style puzzles.

"BIG brain" is an enjoyable, thought provoking, and mentally exercising book. Lots of these puzzles took time for me and that was only Level 1. This book is sponsored by the Alzheimer's association and includes the ten signs to be aware of and where to get more information. This was a most enjoyable way to spend time exercising the mental muscles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank You, Terry Stickels!, September 26, 2009

Puzzle Master Terry Stickels has accomplished two very important things with his new book of mindstretching exercises.

1. He has created an entertaining and challenging collection of brain teasers that everyone will enjoy; and

2. He has collaborated with the book's sponsor, the Alzheimer's Association, to present a series of mental gymnastics designed specifically to stimulate the minds of older readers to help them keep their thinking skills agile and young. What a great accomplishment that is!

Thank you, Terry, for all the good work you do.

2.0 out of 5 stars Big Brain Book for Alz. Not useful at all...to complex..., November 14, 2010

This book looks great and we had all the hope that it would be a positive experience. However, it was a disappointment to see that a college educated person even has trouble with many of the puzzles. It was geared for
some that is fully functioning and more capable that begining or moderate Alzheimers. A disappointment for the money spent. It goes out with the donation items. Don't waste your money, regardless of the recommendation of the Alzheimier's Association. Buy something at Walmart in the childrens book department that is of more use and more
useable for your loved one. Simple and EASY Crossword puzzles or easy 5th grade or 3rd grade work books are much better for your time and money.

This is a great book. I bought it for my 84 year grandmother and she actually saw some improvements in her short term memory after completing all the worksheets.

I purchased the book primarily to 'promote' my 12 & 14 year old to do a little mmore brain exercises. The book sits on our coffee table and we ALL pick it up and work on the puzzles, It is small enough to take small 'bites' from and not too tough to be intimidating. A good family-fun book.

We use this book as part of the materials for a brain exercise group at the local senior center. The puzzles are very challenging for people of any age.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, December 11, 2009

I bought this book because I thought it would help my husband, but his AZ was too advanced for this book. However, I gave it to someone else and they said it's really helping her mother. We are trying everything we can get our hands on to help extend the memory. The doctors said it won't work--I have found with excercise [walking] and any brain stimulation does work. After all, the only way to accurately diagnose AZ is an autopsy. Therefore, I am going to keep trying.
