Book Description

October 1992
Alzheimer's Disease has become the fourth leading cause of death in America. Its victims include not only the four million cases now diagnosed, but also the families of these millions. This clear, practical guide provides all the "what to do, who to ask, and where to look" information that Alzheimer's patients and their families are looking for.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Alzheimer's is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S.; two million diagnosed cases are known to exist. For the families of those two million, this slender volume may make the going a bit easier. At present, the message is not one of hope for cure, but merely of coping. A diagnosis of Alzheimer's provokes emotions akin to those of grieving: denial, fear, depression and then acceptance. But acceptance is not enough--Alzheimer's compels victims and their families to pay rigorous attention to practical matters, the sooner the better. The book's four sections take the reader systematically through the questions and problems he or she will face. Markin knows what he's talking about--his own father was a victim. Legal matters such as guardianship, wills, trusts and power of attorney should be resolved early, he cautions, and explains how. Financial considerations (health and life insurance, protecting assets and evaluating balance sheets) come next. The cardinal rule: "Protect the patient from injury in the home, and protect the home from the patient." Not least important, he reminds caregivers to give themselves a break from the task from time to time to preserve a "sanctuary" and to keep in touch with the outside world. Markin is too prone to exclamation in his prose, but his message deserves the greatest emphasis.

5.0 out of 5 stars If someone you loved has Alzheimer's - you should read this., April 4, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Alzheimer's Cope Book: The Complete Care Manual for Patients and Their Families (Paperback)
If you know nothing about Alzheimer's, and you're afraid to tackle the medical tomes...this is the book to start with. A short, to the point paperback that takes you through an understandable definition of the disease and the first steps you need to take for your loved on. The basics on caregiving are outlined, and how to get help including deciding on and choosing a nursing home. The author is a former director of an ALzheimer's research foundation and his extensive knowledge shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars A no-squeemish approach to handling the death of a loved one, April 4, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Alzheimer's Cope Book: The Complete Care Manual for Patients and Their Families (Paperback)
This is the end-all manual for dealing with the "little details" of death. Chapters on the unexpected death, preparing for an upcoming death or pre-planning to save your loved ones unnecessary hardship are concise and complete. The author takes a direct approach with his funeral workbooks. The information on pricing, purchasing and comparing coffins is a must for all of us who don't wish to be ripped off in our grief. We all will need this book someday.
