About the Author

Mary T. Newport, M.D., has provided care to newborns in Florida since 1983 and is currently the founding director of the newborn intensive care unit at Spring Hill Regional Hospital. In July 2008 Dr. Newport wrote an article, "What If There Was a Cure for Alzheimer's Disease and No One Knew?" which was circulated around the world and became the subject of a lecture she presented at the 2010 Alzheimer's Disease International Conference in Thessaloniki, Greece.

A friend told me about this book when I told her I was worried about brain fog, memory loss and inability to remember people's faces. I wasn't sure if this was menopausal, or due to having cancer 3 years ago - but it certainly made me worried.

I cut back the carbs in my diet and added 4-7 tablespoons of coconut oil into my diet. After a week I noticed that using the Nintendo Brain Trainer my memory test score showed my highest score ever - a 20% improvement on previous measurements. My brain feels clearer and I feel less spaced out.

This is a really important work and I wish I'd come across it before my dad, who had Alzheimer's, died.

It's becoming so clear that so much illness can be resolved just by improving your diet. People do not grow healthy and strong eating pizza, pasta and Cola. Including essential fats (coconut oil and fish oil) and several portions of green vegetables daily, and cutting out sugar and trans fats can make a big difference to your health.

The long held truth that low fat is the way to health is now being found to be completely incorrect. Your brain is made of fat and the sheaths that surround your nerves are made of fat, and if you're not eating any fat, how can they be repaired!! The wrong fats have given the good fats a bad press. Margarines, transfats and hydrogenated oils are all bad - which is why manufacturers are now removing them from products. Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil is good, but most other vegetable oils are very processed and not good for your health.

There is a belief that coconut oil is bad for you - but again this is an outdated information that has been proven incorrect.

One of the worst possible neurological diseases people could ever be diagnosed with is Alzheimer's. From the memory loss to weight loss to depression, it's a sad state for the people afflicted with it as well as the family members who are left to deal with a loved one who may or may not recognize them on a day-to-day basis. With 5.3 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer's disease today with a new case being identified every 70 seconds, finding a solution for this problem is a serious topic worthy of discussion. The author of this book stumbled upon an unexpected dietary "cure" for her husband's Alzheimer's disease.

We are privileged to have this amazing book ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE: WHAT IF THERE WAS A CURE by author Dr. Mary Newport who I first found out about after reading a St. Petersburg Times story about how feeding her husband coconut oil greatly IMPROVED his Alzheimer's. It was such an extraordinary story that I just HAD to learn more about her. I was thrilled to hear she wrote a book about what she uncovered that helped her husband so much.

Dr. Newport correctly identifies the glucose connection to Alzheimer's disease which is now becoming well-known in medical circles as Type 3 diabetes, how ketone bodies are the preferred fuel for brain function, and why medium chain triglycerides (MTCs) found in coconut oil are a miracle for her husband's condition. This is one of the most stunning personal testimonies of how a high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet can dramatically improve health. Enjoyed reading this book and how this Neonatologist lovingly brought her husband back from the black hole of alzheimers. She had interesting things to say about the Alzheimers Association with regard to her discovery of coconut oil as an alternative fuel source for brain cells. I couldn't put this book down; finished it in two days. Then I passed the book on to my mother. There is a definite problem with the western diet that I believe is the reason for so many health problems today. Simple changes like the fats we eat can have big health benefits.

It is important to explain why so many animal studies get negative results for coconut oil. The coconut oil used in laboratory studies is usually fully hydrogenated coconut oil. The process of full hydrogenation gets rid of all the unsaturated fatty acids in coconut oil. The reason that researchers began using fully hydrogenated coconut oil was to study the effects of essential fatty acid deficiency. They chose coconut oil because it is the only fat that can be fully hydrogenated and still be soft enough for rats to eat. Hence the poor results obtained in these studies are due to essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency and not the fault of the saturated fats in coconut oil.

Why does coconut oil work so well? Several researchers have been looking into the therapeutic use of high-fat ketonic diets in the treatment of disease. In 2001, Dr. Richard L. Veech of the National Institutes of Health, and others, published an article entitled, "Ketone bodies, potential therapeutic uses." In 2003, George F. Cahill, Jr. and Richard Veech authored, "Ketoacids? Good Medicine?" and in 2004, Richard Veech also published a review of the therapeutic implications of ketone bodies. The body produces ketone bodies from coconut oil and these can serve as food for the brain and nervous system when our cells develop insulin resistance, which happens in everyone to a greater or lesser extent as we age. With insulin resistance, ketone bodies derived from coconut oil appear to protect neurons when glucose is not available.
