Book Description

November 1, 2004

When you care for someone with Alzheimer's Disease, you need all the sound advice and support you can possibly get. Finding ways to meet your own needs as well as those of the person for whom you care is a daily challenge that raises questions on a range of topics. This book combines the medical expertise of a medical doctor with the practical wisdom of an experienced caregiver into an easily accessible guide, a constant and faithful companion for anyone working with Alzheimer's sufferers.

Alzheimer's A to Z is organized like an encyclopedia, in a convenient alphabetical format that allows you to find the information you need when you need it. Practical entries treat subjects like dressing, transporting, and talking with people with Alzheimer's. Discussions of medical and neurological aspects of the disease treat topics like the functions of short and long-term memory systems. Psychological entries explore emotional and communication issues related to Alzheimer's care. Each entry is engagingly written in direct, uncomplicated language that makes even difficult concepts easy to understand. The tone of the book is positive and constructive, making it as easy to give as it is to read.

More About the Author

Jytte Lokvig grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark. After coming to this country as a young adult, she attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and later earned her degrees at Antioch College West, UCLA, California State University at Los Angeles and California Pacific University, where she earned a Ph.D. in Alzheimer's and dementia care management.

Since 1994, Jytte Lokvig has worked with the elderly, especially those with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia. She coaches families and professional caregivers and designs life-enrichment programs and activities for care-facilities. Her workshops and seminars explore effective attitude and communication to promote a healthy environment based on dignity and humor.

In her teaching, writing and modeling, Jytte Lokvig, Ph.D. throws a lifeline to the caregiver. Her care giving models bring about dramatic changes in the mental state and behavior of the Alzheimer's person. When the life of this individual improves, the lives of everyone else involved will also improve. Contrary to popular belief, Alzheimer's does not have to be a catastrophe, but may indeed offer an extraordinary opportunity for families to create new bonds.

In 2002 Jytte published her first book Alzheimer's A to Z, Secrets to Successful Caregiving. It was very well received and acknowledged as being a uniquely effective guide to caregivers. New Harbinger Publications has since published a revised and updated version under the title of Alzheimer's A to Z, A Quick Reference Guide. The book has since been translated into Portuguese, Spanish, and Japanese.
