3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
The title is totally misleading to me. I thought the book would have some new and creative ideas about things you can do with your dog but it is basically for first-time dog owners. That said, it is not a bad book in that regard but there are too many footnotes that make it very annoying to read. The footnotes should just be included in the text; most of them are...

5.0 out of 5 stars Like walking a dog with a good and witty friend, September 26, 2009
By

This review is from: Am I Boring My Dog: And 99 Other Things Every Dog Wishes You Knew (Paperback)
Reading this book is a lot like having a good, fun dog walk-and-talk with a well-informed and dog-loving friend. About once per page, I found myself wanting to discuss a particular answer with author Edie Jarolim. Am I Boring My Dog ? And 99 Other Things Every Dog Wishes You Knew is witty, up-to-date with the fast-changing world of dog training and veterinary medicine, and kindly disposed to the bewildered dog owner.
The answer to each question is relatively brief, but Jarolim supplies links to Web sites and other sources of more specialized information.
Jarolim knows all about bewilderment and canine companions - the Tucson, AZ-based author with a PhD in English literature was inspired to write Am I Boring My Dog? after she adopted her first pet ever, a shy and fuzzy rescued dog of indeterminate parentage named Frankie. And when Frankie developed diabetes, the former scholar set out to become an expert on diabetes care and treatment.
During the years I was rescuing dogs, I often wished for a concise, readable guide to hand new - and not-so-new - dog owners. Now we have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anything but Dogged, September 22, 2009
This review is from: Am I Boring My Dog: And 99 Other Things Every Dog Wishes You Knew (Paperback)
This is a great read for any dog owner or admirer, but especially for anyone who's contemplating getting their first dog. Edie Jarolim KNOWS, because Frankie, the canine star of the book, is her first dog, and the first dog of a very urban person who never saw herself as a dog owner at all. Here she gives us, from her still fresh perspective, the joys, surprises, and pitfalls of canine companionship, along with a tremendous amount of useful information for anyone from veterans to neophytes. I can think of a few dogs (and even a couple of cats) from my past who would have been happier and healthier canines (well, not the cats, I suppose) if this book had been around for me to read. The real bonus is that it's the opposite of a kibble-dry dog manual. Ms. Jarolim's intelligence, clarity, and sometimes sardonic sense of humor light up every page, and there's very little she hasn't thought to include (Should my dog be a vegetarian? How about alternative medicine for canines? I don't see any recommendations for what my dog should be reading, but maybe I overlooked that section). The book is exhaustive, detailed, and meticulously researched, and the careful organization makes it ideal for a permanent reference manual. I predict there will be a lot of dog-eared copies of this book on shelves for years to come. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dog Book Review: Four Paws Up!, September 20, 2009
This review is from: Am I Boring My Dog: And 99 Other Things Every Dog Wishes You Knew (Paperback)
Am I boring my dog?

Actually, I never thought about that question until I read Edie Jarolim's humorous and informative book. I've been a dog adopter since 1998 and although I'm fairly knowledgeable about dog ownership (greyhounds in particular), there's always more to learn and when it's prefaced with humor and peppered with resourceful footnotes -Jarolim's book makes for an entertaining read.

I give it four paws up!

This review is from: Am I Boring My Dog: And 99 Other Things Every Dog Wishes You Knew (Paperback)

This book is packed full of information on every aspect of owning a dog, written with a sense of humor. It is very entertaining to read so you don't get the sense of reading a "how-to" manual. A must for those who have dogs or those thinking of getting a dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Dog Book, September 9, 2009

I highly recommend Am I Boring My Dog. Edie Jarolim tells readers how to incorporate a dog into their lives in an amusing and personal manner that is easy to read and understand.

If you have a dog, read it and refer to it as needed. If you're thinking of getting a dog, read this book first. You'll learn about what is involved with bringing a dog into your household.

She begins with how she came to get Frankie, her first dog. "First dog" is the key here. Because she knew nothing about raising a dog. As an experienced writer and inexperienced dog person, she was in a unique position to research and write about dog care.

I've had dogs all my life, including raising two litters of puppies, and I learned a lot from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and funny primer for those planning to share their home with a pooch, September 28, 2009
This review is from: Am I Boring My Dog: And 99 Other Things Every Dog Wishes You Knew (Paperback)
Edie Jarolim offers everything-you-need-to-know advice about dogs in an amusing and enjoyable way. It's not just about adopting, feeding, walking and training dogs. It's also about whether you need to brush their teeth; how you get the crud off their eyes; and how to make the most out of a vet visit (the rules of "vet-iquette").
This book is ideal not only for first time dog adopters but also for those who have doubts about whether...well...about whether they're boring their dog! Or whether they're doing right by him/her in general.
The book offers plenty of tips on how to keep the canine resident of the house healthy and happy. And keeps the reader laughing throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars If Dogs Could Read This Book...., September 27, 2009
This review is from: Am I Boring My Dog: And 99 Other Things Every Dog Wishes You Knew (Paperback)
I'm so glad to see that Edie Jarolim's book "Am I Boring My Dog" is rated with five stars here. I loved this book. I've owned dogs all my life (Copper, Nelson, Ole, Chowder and Giggs), and I learned so much from this book. My favorite chapter was devoted to nutrition. I know all about the nutrition for my horse and spend a lot of time researching and doling out just the right portions, fed at the same times each day. Ms. Jarolim helped me understand that a dogs nutrition is just as important, but much easier to accomplish. I also greatly appreciated the chapter on training -- very wise words. Ms. Jarolim's sense of humor is wonderful. I found myself laughing out loud and having to explain myself to my family several times during the weekend I read the book. This book is an entertaining read, chock full of wisdom and up to the minute helpful canine training knowledge. I wholeheartedly recommend it!! I hope that Ms. Jarolim's next book is all about horse care.

Am I Boring My Dog, is a must for ALL dog owners & potential dog owners. It is witty & informative. I don't have a dog & I LOVED it; it makes me think ummmm maybe a dog down the road... Right now I'm applying the premises to my cats...not bad, of course I have "highly" intelligent cats, who are now barking....
