Editorial Reviews

From the Author

No book is ever written alone, and in that vein I wish to thank my wonderful husband, Clark, for his support and encouragement, our two daughters, Holly and Bethany, for their help and ideas, my mom, Ramelle, for her unending listening ear as I worked on this story, and my brother, Steve, for being my sounding board as we discussed childhood antics and memories.  My dad, Robert, no longer with us, loved dachshunds and left all of us that legacy.

I also wish to thank the team at OakTara for this special opportunity to share Sarge's story with other dachshund lovers.

With a degree in English and Secondary Education, MAVIS DUKE HINTON has published four novels in THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series: I AM SARGE (Book 1), I AM DACHSHUND (Book 2), DACHSHUNDS FOREVER (Book 3), and A DACHSHUND'S TRIBUTE (Book 4). Book 5, A DACHSHUND'S MERRY-GO-ROUND LIFE, is due for release in Summer 2015.

She taught all levels of English and related subjects in her 23-year career, including AP British Literature and college grammar and composition, creative writing, speech, and journalism. Over the years, other pursuits have included editor and writer (notably for the North Carolina Biennial State Budget and Liberty University), office administrator, and police officer.

Married for 44 years to her husband Clark, a retired science teacher who does substitute teaching (when he wants to), they have two married daughters and three grandchildren. Sarge in her books is based upon their doxie "granddawg," Shadow. Their own doxie, Duke, is introduced in I AM DACHSHUND. Although her books are fiction, Sarge's tales are based on real-life family and friends. With a special affinity for dogs--dachshunds in particular--a running joke in the family has been Ms. Hinton's "interpreting" for others what dogs are thinking (tongue in cheek, of course), following in her late father's humorous legacy for doing so. This fun enterprise led her to begin writing dachshund books from the dog's point of view. Her hobbies include traveling, reading, writing, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and stimulating conversation.

Raised in a military family, she lived in France and Germany in her childhood, beginning her schooling in a French parochial school and becoming fluent in French in the process. On trips across Europe, the family enjoyed medieval castles in Germany, the World's Fair in Belgium, the Tulip Festival in Holland, and a bull fight in Spain.

She has also traveled across the USA and Canada, calling several states home: Ohio, Florida, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, and North Carolina (where she was born)--with Alaska being her favorite of all. Experiencing its subzero weather, northern lights, and natural beauty, she loves cold weather and snow, incorporating these experiences and character-rich details into her writing.

She became a Christian at age 28, and her Christian worldview influences all aspects of her life, including her writing, where she endeavors to share her faith, encouraging and uplifting readers.

As an educator, Ms. Hinton presented workshops at education conferences on creating and utilizing videos of student-composed skits and interviews with literary characters and authors (such as Macbeth and Hamlet, or Shakespeare and Mark Twain, for example)--complete with period costumes and scenery. Students loved watching their own video productions while reinforcing their learning. Her motto: "Learning English should be fun."

Ms. Hinton has also taught the Bible to groups ranging from first grade children to adult women, and speaks to Christian women's groups.

She taught high school English online 2008 - 2013, interacting with students from across the USA and in several foreign countries. Her courses included essays and compositions, research reports, and varied skills: critical thinking, grammar, reading comprehension, as well as study and vocabulary skills. She retired from teaching altogether in December 2013.

Currently devoting much of her time to writing and marketing her books, she enjoys the remainder of it involved in her church and in pursuit of her hobbies.

Having 3 dachshunds myself, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Sarge, the dachshund, was the narrator of this story. It reminded me a bit of my own mother and father, now deceased. The author definitely kept my interest.
