Book Description

August 1, 2006
A thundering epic about Bucephalus, young Alexander the Great's fierce, fiery, battle-scarred stallion--straight from the horse's mouth.

"I am the dark horse, Bucephalus. I am no black beauty. I am a stallion trained for war." From the moment they dare sit on his back, the fates of Alexander, 12-year-old heir to the Macedonian throne, and Charm, a kind stable girl, are bound to the battle-ready steed. When the boy becomes king, Bucephalus helps his young master transform into a conquering hero. In a hard-won, nearly blind blaze of glory, they gallop from Greece to the golden sands of Persia to the edge of the known world. At their side, as ever, is Charm. This is their epic. Through the eyes of a horse, history unfolds.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10–This is a marvelous book, and much of its strength relates directly to its nonhuman narrator. Alexander the Great's horse, Bucephalas, is always ready to fight if another stallion challenges his position as herd leader; he dominates dung to establish his priority; he whinnies affectionately to his mares, and, occasionally, breaks free to make a foal with one. More importantly, he brings a somewhat nonjudgmental viewpoint to the life and activity of Alexander, screening the conqueror through a horse's norms rather than those of a human being. This viewpoint allows Roberts to narrate extremely harsh incidents of battle or execution as examples of the way a dominant stallion maintains control of his herd. For some readers, the most interesting side of the animal might be his ability, shared with the other horses in the book, to see ghosts, both human and equine. It serves to heighten the tension in several sections. A human viewpoint is provided through Bucephalas's groom, Charmeia, and the three share a horse bond that links them until Alexander and Bucephalas die. Charmeia's consistently kind and tender heart is an effective counterweight to Alexander's almost manic approach to life. Roberts has clearly done her research. Her Alexander is complex, driven, alternately coldly ambitious and warmly generous: arguably both hero and criminal. I Am the Great Horse is a rich, rewarding, and propulsive read that deserves a wide audience.–Coop Renner, Hillside Elementary, El Paso, TX

From Booklist

Part historical fiction, part fantasy, this action-packed war novel tells the story of Alexander the Great from the viewpoint of his beloved horse, Bucephalus, who carries the conquering hero from Greece and Persia to India around 330 BCE. Bucephalus can understand human behavior and speech, and what he does not witness, he picks up from "groom-gossip." Some readers will be intrigued by the personal relationships between the conqueror and his friends and enemies, but the action is thrilling, as horse and rider tear into battle and nearly always win. It all comes together in the loving bond between Alexander, his horse, and his groom, Charm, who hides many secrets: Who raped her mother? With echoes of today's conflicts, she questions what Alexander calls his "liberation" of the peoples he conquers, the massacre, the mutilation, and the torture. The Iliad is constantly invoked, but more than the epic struggle, what is best here is the horse that "sees things that men do not." Hazel Rochman

I knew the story about Bucephalus before the movie "Alexander" came and sold out the box office. "Bucephalus, meaning strong and stubborn," he had said while mounting the stallion. A true story of how the brave 12 year old boy ruled the horse and charged him into battle. Now, this fiction story is a real page turner. If you like horses, black stallions, and adventure, then "I am the Great Horse" is the book for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction (Fantasy) at its Best! Maybe not for very young readers., May 15, 2009

The kudos:

This is a masterfully told story of the life of Alexander the Great as told from his famous, trusty horse. If you love fantasy, horses, or history, you'll love this book. From the very insightful eyes of an endearing horse, my girls have learned about Alexander the Great and other key players from Macedonia and Persia, military ingenuity and leadership, along with the ugliness of war in its many varieties. We sometimes uncomfortably watched the snowball effects of power-hunger, pride, anger, and irresponsible drinking in action, but also witnessed the inspiring virtues of determination, bravery, compassion, and loyalty. Engaging and outstanding read where you are truly drawn into a real time in history, yet there is this element of magic all around you!

I Am the Great Horse is the most creative and riveting "history" book we've read. I will definitely be looking into Katherine Roberts' other works (particularly The Seven Fabulous Wonders series). This is how historical fiction should be...exciting, unbiased, and faithful to the truth -- with a fairly clear representation of what was fictionalized or unknown. Most importantly, it has sparked an interest in us all to delve further into the subject ourselves -- a true sign of a great book in my opinion!

A caution to those with young readers:

As we have been studying ancient Greece, I read this aloud to my daughters (8 and 10) who are likely too young for the intended audience of this book. Nevertheless, every night we stayed up way past our bedtime sharing this story and we found ourselves disappointed when we had to call it quits. After pre-reading it, and debating over whether or not to share this with them, the rewards have been greater than my concerns. My daughters were barely able to grasp some of the mature concepts (legitimacy and the definition of rape), but some honest discussion prior to reading the book did help prepare them. If you're trying to decide whether to read or give this book to your child younger than 12 or so, I suggest pre-reading it due to some brutal and gory battle scenes and the mature concepts (the worst is the mention of rape, though there is nothing sexually graphic whatsoever).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Horsemanship, January 31, 2007
This review is from: I Am The Great Horse (Hardcover)
This is without doubt the best attempt I have read at entering the mind of an animal and viewing human activity from its point of view. Once you have read Bucephelas's (Alexander"s horse's) account of "dominating dung" or "squealing" to show that you are superior to an opponent and not afraid of him, you will never see politicians' and generals' actions in the same way again!

Katherine Roberts must know and love horses deeply and sympathetically. She has done a magnificent job on the history, too, and it has never been so clear what Alexander was up to and why. If this book doesn't win rosettes, I'll eat my copy!
