Editorial Reviews

The tracks on this album have all been previously released through Nonesuch. The film's music supervisor culled them together to create the movie soundtrack.

Curious about the prolific John Adams but not sure where to dip into his imposing back catalog? Look no further, this soundtrack album culls from his entire career, finding the work he's already done appropriate to score this visually stunning and emotionally intense film. Many movie critics have singled out his music as an annoying distraction during the film, to which I have two responses:

1) They always say that about Philip Glass, too, and I treasure many of his soundtracks and most of the movies they came from as different facets of the same creative endeavor. For the music to stand on its own it has to be forceful, but that doesn't mean it can't work in concert with image and story when well-chosen and edited.

2) Though beautiful and compellingly-acted, this is hardly the deepest love story ever told. Instead, it's a somewhat familiar, predictable one; I'd cite Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" more than "Lady Chatterly's Lover," as many have as inspirations, but both take us back to the early days of Modernism, and a conflict between sexual repression and liberation that Adams music seems amazingly attuned to. Like all the best soundtracks, his music serves (perhaps too obviously for some) as the main character's emotional state at key points in the film.

The Shaker Loops and Fearful Symmetries sound especially frought with conflict, but the movie used an even broader selection including excerpts from Nixon in China; this selection still works as a testament to a career of consistent innovation.

As a musician and lover of a wide variety of music, I adore film soundtracks that don't sound like they were downloaded from stock recordings somewhere. This is brilliant material written by one of America's foremost classical composers of the modern age. I was simply enthralled with the whole film, largely because of the John Adams soundtrack. It accentuated every scene in ways rarely seen or felt in films today. I am actually listening to the CD as I write and am as enthusiastic about it now as I was when I walked out of the theater after seeing the film less than a week ago. Bravo to the producers and director for making such a progressive choice....and of course to Mr. Adams for his brilliance and talent!

The soundtrack for the film, I AM LOVE is a first-rate application for what is a first-rate film.

The selection of music during the film acts to underscore the sense of mood, atmosphere and actual scenes taking place in a way that is extremely effective. So many films rely on music which is meant to make us feel happy, fearful, excited or relaxed in very obvious ways.
This Soundtract takes a different approach by carefully choosing music which always lives up to the film which is a well crafted work of art.
John Adams music is so effective for its steady but never boring orchestrations. Other music selections, both modern and classical, go effortlessly along with the "mise en scene" we are experiencing. I am reminded of Stanley Kubrick's thoughtful approach to soundtrack music. It is so well balanced, each selection carefully tailored to the atmosphere and the story taking place on the screen. It does not detract it enhances and enriches. This Soundtract is a singular "enrichment."

The minute the opening scenes took place, I knew I must have this Soundtrack. At the end of the film I had to have it immediately! If not just for the beauty of the selections and orchestrations but to remember the film itself.

For those who have yet to see I AM LOVE and need a bit of the flavor of the feast in store, this soundtrack recording is a fine introduction. Even if the works of John Adams are in the personal music library (including the complete works from which these pieces are excerpted), this very fine selection is so well paced that the enjoyment of both the genius of Adams and his adaptation of his scores to burnish this Italian delicacy is well worth owning. Sadly there are portions of the score that are not included: for probably obvious reasons the excerpt from the Mahler 4th Symphony is part of the repertoire of another recording company, and adding the excerpt from 'Harmonium' may fall into the same problem. But there at least are Adams' wonderful 'The Chairman Dances', a foxtrot for orchestra from his opera 'Nixon in China', the 'Desert Chorus' from his opera 'Klinghoffer's Death' (so right for the Recchi family anti-Semitism that is part of the film's story), the purely orchestral pieces 'Lollapalooza' and the pieces from 'Shaker Loops', ' Fearful Symmetries' and the complex Parts II and III from his epic 'Harmonielehre' to present a fine idea of the feast to follow (and gourmet dining is very much at the center of this film!). Granted these are all excerpt from previous recordings but together they do make sense and are sure to please an audience who may not be all that familiar with this important, stirring music.
