5.0 out of 5 stars Pearl Jam does it again
The new single from Riot Act proves once again that Pearl Jam is here to stay. The most creative band in rock today, releases two great songs with I am Mine, and Down. I am Mine is destined to be a hit, and showcases the talents of all the band members. It's a mid tempo song, and as usual is a creative step forward for the band. Down is an upbeat, almost Tom Petty...

3.0 out of 5 stars from a diehard p.j. fan
"I Am Mine" is a pretty ... good song, but unfortunately, "Down" is not. Therefore this gets 3 stars. I can't wait for "Riot Act" to come out!

Down is an upbeat, almost Tom Petty sounding song that can only be found here on this single. I highly reccomend this single to Pearl Jam fans past, present, and future. If you were not a fan of the last couple albums, these songs are probably more to your taste. Very mainstream, but also creative. Riot Act is gonna ROCK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Promise for 'The Riot Act', October 10, 2002
This review is from: I Am Mine / Down (Audio CD)
'I Am Mine' is the first track to be released from Pearl Jam's upcoming album: 'The Riot Act.' 'I Am Mine' is a moderately placed single with a message of loneliness and longing. Eddie Vedder croons "the ocean is full because everyone is crying / the full moon is looking for friends at hightide" and punctuates each verse with "I only know my mind / I am mine." However, he sings those verses with confidence. While bemoaning a loss of innocence, he offers encouragement that "we don't need to hide," which he retracks later in the song ("We may need to hide"). As a result, the message comes off as one with an underlying sadness, but with tremendous hope. Despite this, the song doesn't lumber, and it doesn't even depress the listener. I've found myself happily humming the tune on a couple of occassions.

The B side, 'Down', will not appear on the album. However, it makes for a nice answer to 'I Am Mine'. Vedder's vocals suggest that he has "fell by the wayside", and "stuck in line", but "symptoms fade" and he "won't let the light escape from [him]." Overall, the message seems to be that even though things may be bleak, and he may be held down, they can't beat the hope out of him.

Both songs are reminiscent of something from 'Ten' or 'Vs.' Old school Pearl Jam fans should be happy with that. Those that complain about Vedder's experimentation should be happy to find something a little more traditional. Overall, two great songs from a great band. I can't wait for the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars B-Side raises questions, February 10, 2003
By
This review is from: I Am Mine / Down (Audio CD)
"I Am Mine" is a great song. Nobody doubts that. It's been all over radio for the last 5 or 6 months. What peaks my interest on this single is the song "Down". This song is a complete 180 degree turn from the normal stuff Pearl Jam has been putting out the last few years. This is the kind of song that could tear up the charts. If they can make this kind of a song, why not make a whole albums worth? The mellow, drawn out, experimental Pearl Jam we've seen the last 5 years could use a facelift. If that's not what they're after collectively as a band, fine. But it would be very nice to see them change.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the old stuff, but its up there., November 10, 2002

I Am Mine is a great song which is well written by Vedder from a very personal aspect, his vocal is excellent with his trademark baritone being very clear. The music is also excellent with the use of a keyboard adding to that excellence,Mcready's guitar solo at the end of the song is one of his best.Down is a slighty more punchy song with very simple lyrics that are good to sing along to,a very good b-side,and a very good song.

This review is from: I Am Mine / Down (Audio CD)
With the new Pearl Jam album "Riot Act" being released soon, I told myself I wouldn't buy this single. Then I found out about the b-side "Down" which would be included on it so I changed my mind. I'm glad I did. I really like the song "I Am Mine". The music and lyrics are excellent. But after giving the single a few listens I think I like the song "Down" even more. It's got a catchy beat, a great message in it's lyrics, and Mike McCready on lead guitar doing his thing at the end. (That guy is great). So I highly recommend buying this single, if not just for the song "Down", which is not on the new album.

P.S. Thank you Pearl Jam for the quality in your music. Please, keep on rockin'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stronger than ever, Pearl Jam are back!, October 13, 2002

This review is from: I Am Mine / Down (Audio CD)
After a couple of years and in classic Pearl Jam fashion, out comes I am mine, the first single off of "Riot Act", the band's 7th studio album, and last one with their record company. Whenever the first single comes out, its always an exciting experience, cause it gives you a preview of whats to come. The rare thing here is that they usually release two studio tracks, and a b-side, which is the case of the I Am Mine european single, yet they decided to only include 1 track and a B-side.

I am mine is a mellow song, with awsome arrangements... youve got to put your ear up to hear how preciously the composition was handled. The strong vocals and direct lyrics make the song stand out even more. If you had the opportunity to listen to this song in any of Ed Vedder's last performances, youll be amazed to hear how better the studio version is. Mike Mcready's solo right at the end is glorious, and its probably one of the best solos on a PJ song ever.
Down is a fast paced song, an comes out a little happy, and that may be the reason why it was kept as a b-side. Its a very nice song actually, and should get some airplay also, the only thing i could say its that it does not sound 100% finished. This is usually the case of the b-sides which are worked on for a long time, but at the end, since it wont be in the album, a certain sparkle applied to Album tracks is missing.
Its great to get a b-side again, since the last 2 single did not contain any. This single was a little hard to find for me, i went all around Texas and Mexico to find it, i should have gotten it from amazon. Well, here it is, the newest addition to the catalog. A great single, the folk sound in the new work, specially in I am Mine, should not be feared. Apart from adding crisp clearness, and an amazing feel )youll be hooked on the songs after a couple of listens) it sets the tone for whats to come. The new album is filled with amazing songs, some hard rocking ones too, but the most important thing of all is that PJ are back, with rock solid tunes, and the desire to rock you, more than ever.
So get that mouse and click on buy it now, or go to your nearest record store, and delight in the wonderful experience that is I am Mine

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold on to your seats!!!!!!!, November 4, 2002

This review is from: I Am Mine / Down (Audio CD)
This is a spectular single! Fan or not, you have to admit this is great rock and roll. Can't really speak for the forthcoming album, but the band seems to have escaped from banal songs that plauged most of Binuaral and parts of Yield. Seriously, Down is probably one of their best--rhythm, melody, drums, bass, lyrics, vocals, especially a killer riff by Mike McCready. Pearl Jam's energy seems as fervent as ever and more importantly as loose as ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars I. Am. ... A proud owner of this single., February 9, 2003
By

No matter what the radio or MTV (then again, it didn't produce a single music video) thinks, Binaural is a classic album... a little mellower and darker than previous Pearl Jam releases (it was kinda like the opposite of Yield, which also is incredible)... so, when I heard that that a new Pearl Jam album was coming out, I was filled with hope and excitement. I walked a couple miles in the rain to pick up Riot Act... but the reason why I did that was not so much because of my loyalty to them (though it obviously was a factor) as it was the previous purchase of this single.

"I Am Mine" hooks the listener with each instrument kicking in, one at a time... and then Matt's pounding drumming finally puts up the promise that a classic song is being displayed. Eddie's vocals get going with "the selfish, they're all standing in line/faithing and hoping to buy themselves time/me, I figure, as each breath goes by/i only own my mind"... honest, tear-worthy words that very few other popular bands could hope to even attempt. Eddie throws in a few thought-provoking comparisons ("the north is to south what the clock is to time/there's east and there's west and there everywhere life"), but it isn't until the chorus that Eddie lets his voice take off like an angel (I think I've said enough lyrics already... haha)... and the band just lets their guitars do the emotion, near the end. Ending the record, "Down" kicks in... a b-side that only missed Riot Act because there're so many great songs already on it. Like "I Am Mine", it's a mix of the best of Vitalogy (in the way the song plays) and Yield (hard-hitting, honest lyrics)... except it's more like "Corduroy" than "Wishlist".

No more words from me about this; just words from PJ.
