4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Album...but hardly emocore
i dont really see how you can class this and fall out boy as emocore?? they really are more pop-punk than anything else. and for what the other reivewer said i do listen to "proper" punk such as dead kennedys and black flag, i find this a very enjoyable record to chill out to and for times when i dont want "proper" punk.
anyhoo onto the CD...its a really good cd;...

anyhoo onto the CD...its a really good cd; it has high points and its low points but still very worth a listen. i found that the keyboards in this record really added something a little extra. the lyrics are great fueled by wit and quite enjoyable. one of my faveourite songs would be "Don't Call It A Come Back"
overall take this CD on the music alone not the scene or what your "punk" friend says about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not usually my bag, November 6, 2005

I usually don't give pop punk (if you want to slap a genre on this, that one seems fairly accurate) much of a chance. I find most of the lyrics to be cliched, and most of the hooks to be boring (and to sound like most of the other bands).

However MCS manages to have really well written lyrics, and compliments them with an unique voice from the lead singer. The hooks on this album are incredibly catchy, and I tend to find myself whistling them throughout the day. The keyboard also ads depth to the typical rock band set up. But instead of being gimmicky (like most of the eighties revival stuff around) they have real personality.

Really what it boils down to is that MCS is different. In a genre that has mostly trite and boring content (in my opinion) Motion City stand out. I think that people really respond to the uniqueness of MCS's sound. A wide selection of the people I know enjoy them, and their songs get a lot of play time on party mixes, and in car stereos.

The album itself is well sequenced, for the most part. It keeps high energy throughout its length. The songs tend to have a similar sound, but they all are distinct enough so as to not make the album drag.

Motion City is a good example of a band that's able to find commercial success as well as establishing an unique sound. Commit this to memory is good as well (more 4 star good than 5), and I hope that MCS keeps up the good work.

I'd reccomend seeing them live as well. There's even more energy than on the album, the singer has an excellent voice (note to fallout boy: pick a lead singer who can perform well without the help of a producer), and they really get the crowd into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, August 11, 2005
This review is from: I Am the Movie (Audio CD)
My boyfriend introduced me to Motion City Soundtrack, and lets just say I fell in love. Both 'I Am The Movie' and 'Committ This to Memory' are works of musical art. Their sound is uniquie and infectious without ever wearing out. This album is one that you can listen to straight through and never once want to skip a track, not to mention, listen to repetedly and not tire of. And if you think the CD is good, check 'em out live, even better!

5.0 out of 5 stars This album makes me feel so good., November 19, 2005
This review is from: I Am the Movie (Audio CD)
Motion City Soundtrack is the kind of band that fills the space that you didn't know existed until they come along. I first came across their music when I heard My favorite accident on the Burnout 3 soundtrack (an excellent game btw!), and it immediately caught my interest. When I heard the whole album I fell in love. The combination of catchy melodies, great involving lyrics but still a bit rough is was appeals to me. I am very glad that this band exists. Their music sets me in a good mood and makes me see the good things in life and see things from a distance. One of the best 10 albums ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshng change, July 2, 2006

This review is from: I Am the Movie (Audio CD)
Let me start off by saying I really love classic rock. I've never heard of these wierd sub genres many reviewers speak of such as emocore, screamo etc. But what I do know is that these guys rock. The lead singer's emo tinged voice behind the pop sound of the rest of the band make for a great combo. The keyboardist is just crazy. I never thought keyboards could sound that way. There really are not any bad tracks here. Every one could be a single which makes it all the more strange that these guys arn't more popular. To say this album is underated is an understatement. They're lyrics are inventive, smart, and even funny. I urge you. give this a listen, even if you hate pop or emo they will completely change your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, June 20, 2004
This review is from: I Am the Movie (Audio CD)
Motion City Soundtrack has a very unique sound. You can't really say it's pop, but you can't really say it isn't either. It's just good music. They're great live too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Motion City Soundtrack- "I am the movie", January 31, 2004

It's hard to find smart pop music. Really hard. While Motion city soundtrack's "I am the movie" isnt purely pop- (it has decided post-punk and new wave influences to it) it is certainly a wonderfully smart, and surprising record. Considering the bands they tour with (i saw them play with sugarcult and mxpx a few evenings ago), one would expect a purely pop-punk, cookie cutter straight from the mold kind of sound. but au contraires; there is very little that these groups have in common. Motion City Sountrack blends a variety of sounds on this, their Debut LP.
after starting off with the average "cambridge", the CD takes off on tracks like "Shiver", "the Future Freaks Me Out", and "My Favorite Accident"; the sound is, oddly, reminiscent of what sparta might sound like if they tried to put out a pop record. the synthesizers add a nice touch that is uncommon in the genre. The album also closes perfectly with "A-OK"- a track that almost makes the album worth buying by itself.
My only complaints with this album are that a.) it doesnt always flow so well; and b.) the song "red dress" is an absolute momentum killer- it sounds out of place with the rest of the record. however, "I am the movie" is a solid debut from a promising group.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bursting With Creativity and Melody, October 7, 2003

This review is from: I Am the Movie (Audio CD)
First of all, let me preface this with the fact that I have now listened to this album 3 times in a row and still love every single track. It is that amazing.

I first heard of this band on the Warped Tour Comp with the song, "My Favorite Accedent". That song hit me with its teasing piano intro, its powerful and moving lyrics, and its amazing production (check out the bridge section with the overlaid vox). That prompted me to download some more of their stuff and that prompted me to purchase the album. To say the least, this album rocks. It is the most creative and interesting punk/emo/indie album since Benjamins "The Art of Dissapointment." The album also flows so well, and the production is excellent (something I usually don't pay too much attention to).

I heavily suggest this album to any emo/indie fan, especially those who like The Get Up Kids and Benjamins. Prepair to have your mind blown!

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I was the movie..., October 9, 2005
This review is from: I Am the Movie (Audio CD)
Genius! I did have to look up CK one, though, since that was just a little before my time. Ahh to be young... Still, this is a seriously ingenious album. I love it! My friends love it. My parents, not so much. But thats ok, cause everyone else thinks its rockin. Sure, the electronic background can take some getting used to, but soon you end up singing along and you just dont care if a few things are right out of the 80's. Besides, Duran Duran kicks butt, so the 80's couldnt have been that bad.

Call them EMO or Post-Punk or just Rockers, this is GOOD stuff. The songwriting is excellent, witty lyrics, upbeat energy bursting from each song; mostly missing the wasted negative energy so often found with many of the pissed off punkers, but that doesn't detract from the urgency in songs like "Don't Call it a Comeback" which recalls the Offspring. Songs like "Red Dress" sound alot like Dashboard Confessional. Throughout this release there is refreshing dashes of different musicial stylings, some 80s guitar and synth as well as the classic Green Day strummed power chords. Lastly, the lead vocals of Justin Pierre are really compelling. Reminds me of why I love Feeble Weiner, ie, just earnest as hell, with a touch of irony and humor. My Favorite Accident is an excellent rocker that recalls the Ataris. Bottom line, buy the album, don't make the mistake of downloading a track or two. They're all good and different in there own way. Can't wait for the Sophomore release!!
