About the Author

Brian has held a series of senior executive leadership roles with both Polaroid and General Electric Corporation. His initial career began with Procter & Gamble out of college. He then joined Polaroid Corporation where he rose to Senior Vice President and General Manager of North America leading this $1.1 billion dollar business. Prior to this position Brian ran Polaroid’s European operations and has held other International and Domestic executive level positions. Leaving Polaroid, Brian led the creation of a venture backed start up company as President and Chief Executive Officer. LifeClips became the leading US provider of digital home-video services. Brian then joined General Electric Corporation as President of their Commercial Solutions Group for GE Security. Brian joined Seattle University’s Mentor program for both undergraduate and graduate students in 2006. Brian now runs a consulting practice helping companies identify and develop business growth opportunities. Poggi holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon and a Masters in Business Administration from Boston University.

This is a well planned process and thoughtful approach that takes you step-by-step into developing a presentation for stating your accomplishments. Not only does it prepare you for a review, but it also provides the discipline of preparation throughout the year with the use of the "weekly log". The chapter-end summaries are especially helpful and, for me, represent the tone and style of the actual review itself. Chapter 8's three sections are invaluable. The author has taken what is typically considered a "dreaded" process, and turned it into one that is logical and easy to follow.

Format: Paperback
As an entry level sales development specialist, I assumed that since my performance metrics were so transparent, that my boss didn't need any additional prodding from me in my performance review. After an uneventful 1st quarter performance review, however, I decided to give the "I Am Not Average" approach a shot. The result from my 2nd quarter review? More responsibility on my team as I became my boss's second in command, added commission incentives and an offer to shadow and interview for a position that most aren't even considered for until a year into the job. I am thankful I learned so early in my career the importance of a good performance review, and have Brian to thank for it. The process was easy, and the success was overwhelming.

I would recommend this to everyone regardless of your career field. If it works in a transparent sales role, it will work in every role and career. At such a bargain price, the potential rewards far outweigh any risks, and you'd be crazy not to at least try it.

Yes ... you owe it to yourself and your family to take control of your employment future by being prepared with more quantifiable performance information about yourself than your boss has. Preparation, organization, presentation, and follow through are key. I was a corporate senior manager for 20 years and now an executive recruiter for 15. This powerful, but simply presented, little book is applicable for employees AND those looking for a job. Bravo to Brian for boiling down a complex and important concept into an easy to follow step by step guide. I am passing it on to my kids, friends, and busienss colleagues.

Format: Paperback
The book is succinct: the author doesn't belabor the points or the examples, as other books of this type tend to do. You can easily read the book in one sitting. It is also written for a very specific audience: people who don't talk up their own accomplishments, or those who avoid the spotlight but do an excellent job. For this audience, the book illustrates the career and financial impact of being passive and develops a strategy for turning the performance review into a dialogue mostly controlled by you.
