5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't want this book to end! Where's the sequel?, October 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Am I Old Yet?: The Story of Two Women, Generations Apart, Growing Up and Growing Young in a Timeless Friendship (Hardcover)
My God, a real book! I couldn't get over this writing! Thoughtful, smart, funny as heck and so wise and brave. It made me realize how every night I go to sleep grateful my parents are still alive even though I pay very little attention to their well being because they're so far away. Komaiko has reminded me my own aging is happening now, it's not so bad, and there is a solution to getting old besides a lot of denial and a face-lift. Read this book! You'll love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant and Wise, April 6, 2000

This review is from: Am I Old Yet?: The Story of Two Women, Generations Apart, Growing Up and Growing Young in a Timeless Friendship (Hardcover)
I saw Leah Kamaiko interviewed on last Sunday's Today Show. We were also treated to footage of Leah and Adele walking and talking together. True soulmates. Seeing them reminded me of how moved I was when I read "Am I Old Yet?" the book Leah wrote so that all of us could share what these two wonderful women have learned from each other. There is only one age, alive, and that life is best lived in connection to ourselves and each other. Leah's willingness to face her fears of aging and learn from them gives gentle space for the rest of us to explore this taboo subject. For years in my psychotherapy practice I have worked with many people facing aging and mortality issues for themselves and their loved ones. "Am I Old Yet?" is poignant and wise. It illuminates while it confronts and comforts. I highly recommend this book. It is a valuable resource for our continuing collective journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Friendship through the ages, August 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Am I Old Yet?: The Story of Two Women, Generations Apart, Growing Up and Growing Young in a Timeless Friendship (Hardcover)
I was touched by the honesty, simplicity and humor of Leah Komaiko's writing in this wonderful book. As a 44-year-old woman, I relate to the challenges of aging in our youth-worshipping culture. I was also struck by the ways in which the friendship between these two women progressed. There were moments when the author seemed ready to "throw in the towel," but the fact that she persisted even when things didn't go quite the way she planned was an inspiring example of how to love another human being, warts and all. I recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterfully told story!, March 21, 2000
This review is from: Am I Old Yet?: The Story of Two Women, Generations Apart, Growing Up and Growing Young in a Timeless Friendship (Hardcover)
I just finished this book yesterday and I must say that it is most definitely a keeper. At age 35, I AM Leah. I couldn't get over so many to the parallels in our lives. That, in itself, was worth reading the book! I began befriending the elderly in nursing homes at age 20 and it has certainly jolted me into putting my life into perspective at times. The absolute purity of these kinds of relationships endure the test of time and the warmth and wisdom gained last long after the person has departed from this earth. Leah Komaiko did a supurb job of capturing the essence of her relationship with Adele in a way that made me nod in agreement in every chapter.

I love this book! It is inspiring and truly entertaining. It's the first book I've read cover to cover without stopping since my Golden Books days. I'm sending copies to my best friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Move over "Tuesdays with Morrie" Komaiko's done it again, October 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Am I Old Yet?: The Story of Two Women, Generations Apart, Growing Up and Growing Young in a Timeless Friendship (Hardcover)
Komaiko's done it again. Being the father of three little girls my kids have read all her books and I was happy to see there is finally one for us "adults." As a man I still found it fascinating to read this delightful, humorous and thought provoking book written about women. Move over "Tuesdays with Morrie." Komaiko's book is the lightening and thunder that was missing there. A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, poignant look at timeless friendship w/90+ year-old., October 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Am I Old Yet?: The Story of Two Women, Generations Apart, Growing Up and Growing Young in a Timeless Friendship (Hardcover)
I loved this book! It speaks to friendship, our fear and loathing of aging/"Old People" and still maintains a dry sarcasm that had me laughing out loud. I'm gonna buy 15 copies and give them as gifts. Anyone who has a parent, a child or a dear friend needs to read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Am I old Yet?, March 18, 2002

This review is from: Am I Old Yet?: The Story of Two Women, Generations Apart, Growing Up and Growing Young in a Timeless Friendship (Hardcover)
I am so impressed by the honesty of the author, Leah Komaiko--her fear of being old and her sense of insecurity. I am also pleased that she found a way to go through her fear. I am so sorry to know that Adele (the 94 years old lady in the book) was abandoned by her family with no particular reasons. I remember my 89 years old father told me that the worst thing to be old is... you were young not too long ago. And when you get older you would prefer to be with your family. I can imagine how Adele felt when she was left at a nursery home by herself with no visitations from her family... It is a wonderful book!
