5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for dog lovers of all ages
This is a delightful book. Told from a dog's perspective, Blount's verse is clever and perfectly matched to the stunning black and white photographs it accompanies.

2.0 out of 5 stars not as good as
A lot of the photos look alike. the quotes are pretty good, but the pictures should be more diverse. I suggest Jim Dratfield's books, which have the creative photos as well as the creative words!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Xmas gift!, November 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: I Am Puppy Hear Me Yap: The Ages of Dog (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my father for Christmas, but he's getting it "used" because I just had to read it as soon as it arrived. I love the pictures, and the poems are terrific. I can just hear Boy Blunt's voice. I can't wait till Christmas morning to hear my dad read it aloud. (No, no one paid me to say these things!)

5.0 out of 5 stars I am Puppy - Hear me Yap, December 7, 2000
By A Customer

This is the best combination word/picture book I have ever seen. It's very clever the way the verse just fits the photos. Anyone who has ever owned a puppy no matter what breed [or lack thereof] will take a trip down memory lane by reading this. I bought it for my niece, but I don't know if she's ever going to receive it. I'm having too much fun with it. A rare find!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: I Am Puppy Hear Me Yap: The Ages of Dog (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my wife, who loves dogs and artistic photographs. It's got lots of pictures of puppies (and adult dogs too) and great little poems/writings next to each photo.

Guaranteed to make you smile! Order this fine coffeee table book today!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent photographs; weak text, November 23, 2001
This review is from: I Am Puppy Hear Me Yap: The Ages of Dog (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed the photographs in "I am puppy, hear me yap: The ages of dog." Photographer Valerie Shaff has a real talent, and this book is full of wonderful shots of dogs. The only weak link in this book is the text by Roy Blount, Jr. Blount is trying to be funny. Sometimes he succeeds, but often I found his prose simply annoying or distracting from Shaff's outstanding work. But if you enjoy a limerick about dog vomit or a nasty insult directed at actor Steve Guttenberg, maybe you'll like Blount's contributions.

But if Blount is not your cup of tea, just ignore him and focus on Shaff's photographs. Her photographs really seem to capture the thoughts and emotions that run through a dog's mind. There are a wide variety of different types of photos: some tender, some funny, some bursting with energy. There are both action shots and shots of dogs at rest. Many different breeds are represented. I recognized such breeds as dalmatian, bassett hound, beagle, poodle, and others.

Shaff captures dogs, both singly and interacting with each other, in various settings: in the grass, in the snow, on the pavement, at home, etc. If you've ever loved a dog (and I have!), this book will certainly touch both your heart and your funnybone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought one, going back for more!, December 18, 2000

We have their first book "If only you knew...." and loved it, so when I saw this for the first time, I scooped it up. I bought it for a gift for another dog lover. My 12 year old son and I read it together and laughed our heads off. He wouldn't let me wrap it until he was able to pour over every page again by himself. I heard him laughing for at least an hour. I am buying one for him now, and will surely buy many more through the years. I feel this book is just as good as their first book. Having both books to thumb through around the house, would certainly quell any bad mood, or gloomy day!

5.0 out of 5 stars I only wish there were more pages!, March 5, 2003

Rarely do people capture a puppy's playfulness, spunk, and strong personality with such clean elegance and coherence. There are no prissy, smoochy sayings and no sappy mushy talk (thank goodness), but the spirit of the puppy is captured quite nicely with the gorgeous, full page black and white photos. A reviewer thought of the book to be written in a child's point of view and wouldn't appeal to adults, yet I think that it was written with a youthful pup's point of view- which naturally is from a young perspective. One just can't associate seriousness with an image of a puppy destroying your slippers, basking in all that is naughty and mischievous. It's a coffee table book that lightens the mood and celebrates youth.

5.0 out of 5 stars A BOOK TO MELT YOUR HEART!, October 3, 2001

One look at these adorable puppies and your heart will instantly melt. I have an English Cocker Spaniel, Ben, who can be an angel while I am at work during the day and the Tazmanian Devil by night. Could I scold him - it is extremely difficult. How could one ever intently look into the huge, sad, dark brown eyes of a spaniel and feel anything but love! Being a counsellor with a background in psychology, I believe in disciplining with a philosophical approach. I talk and Ben listens, intently - all the time wondering, "just how many minutes are left in this counselling session before I can chase the cats!" "So, I chewed up your favourite aromatherapy candle - it smelled like strawberries, and so I had an accident on the floor, how would you feel if you had to go outside to due your duty on the front lawn?" These puppies seem to be feeling all those same thoughts, and the verses will certainly bring a smile. "I Am Puppy Hear Me Yap" makes a perfect gift for yourself or any canine lover. The photographs will warm your heart for years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet little puppies!, December 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: I Am Puppy Hear Me Yap: The Ages of Dog (Hardcover)
I Am Puppy Hear Me Yap is an excellent book. The pictures incite many "awwww"s and the quotes usually go along with the pictures very well. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I thought their first book, If You Only Knew How Much I Smell You was even better. I would highly recommend both books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must buy for dog lovers, January 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: I Am Puppy Hear Me Yap: The Ages of Dog (Hardcover)
This book was really cute. The poems were terrific and the pictures matched perfectly. It was really funny. There were poems like: I'm a big puppy, these are my slippers. Neither one is this little nipper's. I'll chew these up and and then chew him limb from limb from limb from limb. The picture was a lab eating leather slippers next to a stuffed lion. I loved this book!
