Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-12-Written from the point of view of a smitten young man, these 33 short, free-verse poems narrate the ups and downs of a teen romance. They begin with the "First Look" at the high school lockers, move to the beach, and conclude with the painful realization that the girl has lost interest in him. The last poem, "Seeds," suggests that the cycle is about to begin again. The collection includes an allusion to homosexual love in "Justin and Frank," which the writer observes with sensitivity and discretion. While this book tells a story that has been told before, it does so with fresh images and without cliches. A black-and-white photograph begins each section ("Falling In" and "Falling Out") and provides visual closure. Students will readily identify with this fine book, and fans of Mel Glenn's Back to Class (Clarion, 1988) will find similar satisfaction here.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-7. More dramatic monologue than poetry, these 33 simple pieces make up a kind of short story about a boy falling in and out of love. The short lines, everyday words, and contemporary imagery make this accessible to even reluctant readers; and the spacious design of the book, with clear type and a few photographs (including a cover picture in pink and blue), will lure readers of both sexes to the ever-popular theme. From "First Look" and "First Kiss" to "First Fight" and "Changing Channels," kids will recognize their world. The vignettes are immediate: passing notes in the classroom, talking on the phone, meeting at the beach or the video store, watching cable TV. Occasionally a line astonishes you with sound and sense--for example, when he explores her hand "notch by knuckle" in the movie dark. A few lines rhyme, but mostly the rhythm is casual and conversational, the feeling gentle. This is romance. Hazel Rochman

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great, March 27, 2010
This review is from: I Am Wings: Poems About Love (Hardcover)
It's rare that poems about love, especially teenage love or first love escape being really cheesy. Most of the great love poems that we hearken to were written well before this century and most were written the century before that. Love, as a concept, as a subject of poetry has become very tired, old, used and cliché. This is unfortunate considering that it's one of the most profound, complex, and beautiful elements of human life.

All that is to say that this novel is not much of an exception on being cheesy, but past the verse itself, the story being weaved from poem to poem creates something somewhat interesting and unique. Also, I do appreciate poetry written for the young adult genre, because there is very little of it. This book is a quick light read that I recommend to those who want to reminisce about first love or look toward it. It's lighthearted and fun, much like the way first love feels.

This review is from: I Am Wings: Poems About Love (Hardcover)
I have just read I am Wings and I thought that it was a great book. It is full of love stories about getting together and going through the heartbreak of breaking up but still getting through the heartbreak. I think that it was a good book because it taught you about love and how it feels to be in love from when you were a kid to when you were full grown and all the memories that you and your loved ones had.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, January 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: I Am Wings: Poems About Love (Hardcover)
I read this book with my Language Arts class and have an absolutely fabulous teacher. Every day in class we have a quote of the day and then do a "quick write". After we do this we read one of Ralph Fletcher's I Am Wings: Stories of Love and evaluate based on the way the words are layed out on the pages and talking about it out loud; figure out what the poem means. It is a very realistic book and challenges young and old alike to think about what the author is trying to say and talks in depth about the typical middle school dating relationship. As my class got into the book I found myself looking forward to the poems and the saga of Lea and his girlfriend. Great book for anyone. ~Amanda~
