Product Description

AmI! Are they out there, hovering on the Whispernet, waiting to get in on an unwanted download? That’s the troubling question that haunts Anna, a senior citizen separated from her family in an assisted living facility, when she orders a Kindle reader, and strange things start to happen. Is the cause a voodoo spell put on the Kindle by the peculiar Haitian attendant? Is it an electronic alteration caused by a weird sci-fi book download? Is it an alien presence known as Ambient Intelligence (AmI) that means her harm? Or, as everyone tries to convince her, is the problem just a technical glitch in her Kindle. It takes her growing romantic relationship with a handsome resident and the close tie between Anna and her 14-year-old grandson to sort it all out. If you’ve got a Kindle, don’t miss this lighthearted mystery from Myra Concannon. And be sure to check the next time the tiny disk turns in the upper left hand corner of your Kindle and you get a download. Did you really place that order…or is it AmI?

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept, August 12, 2009
This review is from: AmI (Kindle Edition)
I have been informed by the publisher, that based on the following review, the author has rewritten portions of this book to 'correct' some issues.

As a general rule, I don't read books more than once, so I cannot comment on the changes.

Plot/Storyline: 3 Stars

I had to suspend a little too much reality to get into this. The main character somehow purchases a Kindle with no computer, but we are not told how she does it and she later states that she has no idea how to contact Amazon. Toward the end, it was implied that perhaps her daughter bought it on her behalf, but it made me wonder throughout most of the book.

We are also lead to believe that a bestselling author puts his brand new novel on sale for the Kindle for less than $5.00. A small tidbit, but it did begin to make me wonder if this author even owns a Kindle.

When the woman decided to blame an author for her Kindle issues, I honestly began to wonder if it was just going to end with her just being senile after all. I think if she had called Amazon first, this part might have been more believable.

In spite of these items, it was an intriguing story.

Character Development: 2.50 Stars

Supposedly, the main character begins to receive unordered books on her Kindle, but she never once thinks of checking to make sure she was not charged for them? Odd. That would have been my first thought. The main character is described as not being technologically saavy, but this seemed a bit over the top.

The daughter's motivation was not really explored enough. I can't imagine a grown woman hating her mother for setting curfews and being a little strict during her teenage years. It was especially hard to believe knowing that the daughter had a teenager of her own. Later, her daughter seems to do a complete turn around, yet another unsubstantiated change.

At one point, the old man in the story implies that the main character is senile an imagining everything. In the next sentence, he tells her how attracted he is to her?

Obviously, some of the finer points of these characters' actions need to be scrutinized.

Writing Style: 4 Stars

I truly enjoyed the writing style of this author. The dialogues were well written to the point where you could truly hear the characters speaking.

I would definitely be interested in purchasing more work by this author.

Editing/Formatting: 5 Stars

I found no significant editing errors in this novel, and the Kindle formatting was perfect.

Overall: This is an entertaining little romp that Kindle owners will probably enjoy just for the interesting concept.

Rating: PG-13 for adult concepts
