Product Description

The AmScope M148B-E digital monocular compound microscope has 10x and 20x widefield eyepieces, a forward-facing nosepiece with three DIN achromatic objectives, LED illumination, a 0.65 NA single-lens condenser, and a plain stage. The 0.3MP camera has a CMOS color sensor, image capture and editing software, and USB 2.0 output to capture or display still or video images on a computer or projector. The forward-facing revolving nosepiece has 4x, 10x, and 40x DIN achromatic full-glass objectives that provide high-resolution color-corrected images. The monocular viewing head holds the WF10x or WF20x eyepiece on a fixed 45-degree vertical inclination to reduce eye and neck strain and has 360-degree rotation capability to provide a more comprehensive view and enable sharing. A digital compound microscope is used for inspection and dissection of specimens when two-dimensional images are desired, and where image capture, detailed records, or documentation is required.

The 0.3MP digital camera has a CMOS color sensor for displaying still microscopy images and streaming live videos to a computer or projector, and 40x magnification. The camera can be mounted in any 23mm eye tube. The camera includes image capture and editing software that provides still image and live video capture and editing capability, including measurement functions. The software supports JPG, TIF, GIF, PSD, WMF, and BMP file formats and is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8; Mac OS X; and Linux. Camera drivers are compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8; Mac OS X; and Linux. The software includes Windows APIs for native C/C++, C#, DirectShow, Twain, and LabVIEW that enable custom application development. The camera has a USB 2.0 data port (cable included).

The microscope has lower (diascopic) Brightfield illumination that transmits light up through the specimen for enhanced visibility of translucent and transparent objects. Brightfield (BF) illumination allows the specimen to absorb light, resulting in a dark image on a light background. LED illumination provides bright, cool light for working with temperature-sensitive or live specimens. The 0.65 NA single-lens condenser and disc diaphragm control the amount of light illuminating the specimen. The plain stage is 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches and has an opening for light transmission and stage clips to secure the slide or specimen in place while viewing. A stage stop prevents the stage or specimen from coming into contact with the objectives. Coaxial coarse focus eases use for young viewers. All mechanical components are constructed of metal for precision and durability, and the solid-metal frame has a stain-resistant enamel finish. The microscope is powered by a 110VAC adapter (included) or three AA batteries (sold separately).

Microscopes are instruments used to enhance the resolution of an object or image. Types include compound, stereo, or digital. Compound microscopes use a compound optical system with an objective lens and an eyepiece. Stereo microscopes show object depth in a three-dimensional image. Digital microscopes are used to display an image on a monitor, rather than looking through a lens. Microscopes can have monocular (one), binocular (two), or trinocular (three) eyepieces, with varying magnification abilities. Magnification ability refers to the size of an image. Resolution, also known as resolvant power, refers to the clarity of the image. The interaction between field of view (FOV), numerical aperture (NA), and working distance (WD) determines resolution. Microscopes can control magnification through a fixed focus, or through a range of adjustments. They can also utilize LED, fluorescent, and mirror light sources to help control viewing capabilities. Microscopes are widely used in education, lab research, biology, metallurgy, engineering, chemistry, manufacturing, and in the medical, forensic science, and veterinary industries.

United Scope manufactures microscopy equipment and accessories under the brand name AmScope. The company, founded in 1996, is headquartered in Irvine, CA.

This microscope arrived in assembled condition with accessories to be install separately such as the digital camera etc. The instruction booklet is thin but visiting the company website on microscope provides additional information. I spend sometime to figure out how all the accessories work and its actually not that hard. to remove the eye piece to install the camera, just look for a small screw at the top of the metal barrel. It is very small and painted black, took me sometime to figure out how to take it out and mount the camera. haha.
The customer service is very prompt and nice.

If you want to look at 3D objects, get the stereo microscope. I highly recommend AmScope!

I ordered this microscope for my daughter and it came on time. Initially, I thought there were missing parts (adapters for the camera). I contacted Amazon Customer Service and the rep I spoke with wasn't knowledgeable about this item at all. He told me that Amazon couldn't provide the missing parts and that I either make additional order for the missing parts or return the product and reorder it. When I reorder, I should call the "seller" to make sure that all parts are inclusive before shipping out! It was one of the most ridiculous thing I heard from any customer service rep thus far. Contacting Amazon Customer Service proved a waste of my time.

However, with all that said, when I received an email from someone named Peter (from AmScope, the actual seller) who apparently received the customer feedback I submitted via my Amazon account about the problem I was having. He gave me the right information and instruction on how to mount the camera onto the eyetube of the microscope. There wasn't any missing part as I had initially thought. After being able to change the eyepiece and mount the camera, I was 100% happy with this microscope. The only thing I would complain about this product is that there is no instruction or visual information to show customers how to change the eyepieces or mount the camera. TIP: There is a 2x2mm screw (very small) on the eye-tube below/close to the eyepiece that you would need to unscrew or loosen (use the small screw driver that came with the microscope) in order to change the eyepieces or mount the camera.

I ordered this microscope for my 9 year old niece who wants to become a veterinarian. It looks GREAT once you open it up, the packaging is bland and it comes in a plain brown box with no color or print design, but alright its a quality item that is supposed to take her into entry college years. The biggest problem that I have is that I opened it to check its contents before giving it to her and realized that it DOESN'T SHIP with an instruction manual!!! How do you advertise an item this complex for children and then not give a users manual! Then when I went to AMScope.com to download one for her it says that portion of the site doesn't exist (404 error)!!! So now I have a beautifully useless piece of equipment that she is not going to be able to use. Not Cool and I am Not Happy!!

Some simple preparation could have prevented this problem, the description says that there is a users manual included with the contents and there is not!! The 1 page insert says that the users manual is downloadable, but again, it IS NOT!

The scope looks like it will be a good one (I hope that it is or it will be going back quickly) but so far I am not impressed with the overall package or the seller's website. Hopefully they will respond quickly and I can change this to a more positive report.

Very sturdy, good range of magnification, clear optics for a dirt cheap price, not much more cost than what you encounter at a hobby or toy store for much less quality. I am pleased.
