Product Description

AmScope T490B 40X-2000X Professional Trinocular Lab Education Biological Compound Microscope with 3D Two-Layer Mechanical Stage

From Manufacture:

AmScopeT490B features a unique simul-focal optical system with an adjustable trinocular port to enable well-focused clear images on your computer or video screen while simultaneously obtaining sharp, focused images through the eyepieces. In addition, the T490B's industry standard 23mm photo port can be converted into a C-Mount port by attaching the included C-mount adapter, allowing you to attach most microscope digital cameras and video systems on the market. The T490B includes a 30-degree inclined 360-degree swiveling trinocular Siedentopf head, a 3-D mechanical stage, and an intensity-variable halogen illumination system. This versatile microscope is also capable of being upgraded with various accessories and attachments listed in the optional section for additional functions. It is a perfect laboratory instrument for clinics, Vets, Doctors, and professional students. It arrives brand new in a factory sealed box.

Simul-focal Optical System

Most trinocular microscopes allow you to view either through the trinocular port or the eyepieces only, forcing you to switch between the two. Since these trinocular ports are not simul-focal with the rest of the microscope optical system, you have to re-focus the microscope after each switch. The T490B, however, erases this step by providing simul-focal viewing. Especially handy for teaching demonstrations, clinical examinations and laboratory applications, the simul-focal feature allows your students or colleagues to view clear images simultaneously while you work through the eyepieces.

About Microscopes

Microscopes are instruments used to enhance the resolution of an object or image. Types include compound, stereo, or digital. Compound microscopes use a compound optical system with an objective lens and an eyepiece. Stereo microscopes show object depth in a three-dimensional image. Digital microscopes are used to display an image on a monitor, rather than looking through a lens. Microscopes can have monocular (one), binocular (two), or trinocular (three) eyepieces, with varying magnification abilities. Magnification ability refers to the size of an image. Resolution, also known as resolvant power, refers to the clarity of the image. The interaction between field of view (FOV), numerical aperture (NA), and working distance (WD) determines resolution. Microscopes can control magnification through a fixed focus, or through a range of adjustments. They can also utilize LED, fluorescent, and mirror light sources to help control viewing capabilities. Microscopes are widely used in education, lab research, biology, metallurgy, engineering, chemistry, manufacturing, and in the medical, forensic science, and veterinary industries. AmScope has been manufacturing microscopy equipment and accessories since 1996, headquartering in Irvine, CA.

For a sub-$300 microscope, this is a very good value. But compared to Nikon or Olympus professional models that cost 10 times more, it would be an unfair comparison. Simply put, optical and mechanical quality and performance fall well short of professional models. For students and hobbyists, this is more than adequate.

I also bought the Phase Contrast Kit (Model PCT) directly from Amscope for $684. When I was purchasing it, I thought it was a bit strange that Amscope priced the contrast kit so high since the microscopes it was designed to be used with cost only a fraction. I thought maybe the quality of the contrast kit might be high. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. It was not really useable so I ended up returning it.

The reason why I mention the Phase Contrast kit is this. For anyone considering buying anything from Amscope, buy from Amazon if you can. Returning anything to Amazon is exceptionally easy. That's not the case if you buy directly from Amscope. I had to call 3 times to get an RMA number, then call 3 times to get a refund processed. They eventually refunded the full price less shipping cost but it took too much effort to make that happen. Their technical support is non-existent.

This is an amazing microscope and I would recommend it to everybody. It is a "heavy duty" one so you do not need to worry about it breaking. My 7 and 8 year old played with it all day after some instructions how to use it. Unless this microscope gets dropped on the floor, there really is nothing that they could break. I am extremely impressed with the quality of the lenses and how easy it is to operate it. The detail you see even at the lowest setting is amazing. It also comes with a dustcover.
I am trying to find a sturdy case for it and all the extra lenses and attachments that come with it. If anybody can advise me on this, that would be great.

I just bought the 40x-2000x Lab Trinocular Biological Compound Microscope (Dec 2011). The reason I choose this model was for the mechanical stage (sturdy, no wobbly), the 350 degree rotation head for 3 or 4 people to use without moving around and for camera use if I buy one in the future, and price. I received it and everything looks fine. I tested it with some of the slides I ordered along with the microscope and it works really well. I will suggest you buy a cleaning kit along with the microscope. I wish I had one when I received mine. Also, you will need a storage or traveling box. Amscope sells 2 different ones for this microscope. I am still shopping around. I wish I had compare the warranty between the microscopes before I bought mine. This one only has 5 years warranty. I will suggest you look at a friend microscope before you buy one. This is a big investment (at least for me) Cover all your bases before you make your decision. I expect this microscope to be used by my children for all of their homeschooling years.

When I bought this I didn't really understand how important all the various bits of functionality were. Its now obvious and I'm glad they are all there, the little diaphram above the light, the ability to move the lens above the light up and down, very nice xy movement of the slide. With practice you can move the slide anywhere you want and refocus at the same time without looking up from the slide. Anyway I really like it, great quality.

The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.
In terms of bang for the buck, this may be the best techie man toy ever.

PROS

Impressive presentation. It's huge, at 14-1/2 inches tall without a camera and almost 20 inches tall with a compact digital camera on the trinocular port. It would be a little taller with an SLR/DSLR camera.

Well constructed with a really solid feel to the whole thing. Knobs that move, such as the focusing knobs, the condenser positioning knob, and the stage positioning knobs, all move smoothly.

The optics are quite good. Achromatic (and not planar), obviously, at this price point. But certainly good enough for students and hobbyists like me.

This is no toy in the cheap sense of the word. This is a serious instrument.

Overall, a great value at the $380 I paid the T490B-DK kit. (Which is this T490B microscope bundled with its optional DK-DRY100 darkfield condenser). I recommend you save yourself $90 by buying the T490B without the darkfield condenser. You can add the condenser at any time.

EDUCATION

Ideal for homeschooling.

As an 8-10 year old child circa 1950, I was given a cheap chemistry set and a toy microscope. I was never able to do anything with the chemistry set and the microscope was a useless piece of junk. Great idea. Encourage your kids to develop an interest in science by giving them scientific toys that do nothing but frustrate them.

If you're lucky enough to have a child who's interested in science, the smartest thing you can do for them would be to buy them this microscope and a few (2-4) boxes of prepared slides. The benefit is not just in the `discovery' value in getting really good views of really small things.
