5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful pictorial history, December 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Amagansett, NY (Paperback)
This is a lovely book chockablock full of photographs dating from 1853 which depict life in this coastal village on Long Island. For me the devastation of the Hurricane of 1938 provides some of the most dramatic photos, while the chaos of the war years provides a great deal of the drama. Most interesting is historian Lucinda Mayo's account of the only other terrorist attack on the American mainland besides the horrors of Sept. 11, 2001. On the morning of June 13, 1942 eight German sabateurs landed in a submarine on Amagansett beach with the intention of moving inland and attacking the Tennesee Valley hydroelectric plants. Fortunately, they were caught by authorities before they could fulfil their nefarious plans.
Carton Kelsey's voluminous research and Lucinda Mayo's crisp writing style make this book one that will stay on my shelf for a long, long while. A great read!
