Extremely loud and annoying fridge,
By Ted (Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Amana : ABB1921DEW 18.5 Cubic Foot Refrigerator - White
We've had this fridge for about 3 months. It replaced a Whirlpool that died unexpectedly after only 1 year. The Amana is a terribly noisy fridge that I would not recommend to anyone. You hear all sorts of popping noises when the compressor starts up. When the compressor is running we can hear it in all the rooms that are next to the kitchen. It's awful. When you shut the doors, the fridge makes this sucking/gugrling noise from the drain tube. And when the compressor finally shuts down it makes loud popping noises for 20 minutes afterwards. I hate it.
I tried making some adjustments, like putting a piece of carpet under the fridge to absorb some of the noise, but it only helps a little. I also checked the fans to see if they were causing the noise, but no, the sound is coming from inside the compressor. The noises are so loud you can hear them over the TV in the living room next to the kitchen. I also called the customer service line about the noises - they sent someone out to look at it (still under warranty so no charge). The guy basically told me when he walked in the front door that there was nothing he could do. We listened to the fridge and he checked it out to make sure there wasn't an actual problem. He said this is just how the fridge is made - they've replaced metal tubing with smaller gauge plastic tubing and as a result you hear more sounds from the compression/expansion/defrost cycles. There are some good things about the fridge: Fridge on top is much more convenient than freezer on top. Even though space is only 18.5 cu ft, we find that the fridge is laid out well so you can make good use of the space Bottom line: if you need a fridge for a garage or some other place where you won't be around to hear it, this is a fine choice. Otherwise, DO NOT BUY IT. YOU WILL REGRET IT LIKE WE DO.

Noise from this Refrigerator is Intolerable,
By mix whit (Urbana, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Amana : ABB1921DEW 18.5 Cubic Foot Refrigerator - White
I purchased this model two months ago. I don't believe it started out so noisy, but over these last two months it has developed into such a noisy fridge that I may be willing to buy a new one (different brand) just to get rid of it. When the compressor turns on there are a series of knocking noises inside the unit that go on for 30-60 seconds. These noises are loud enough that they wake me up at night (my bedroom is two halls away with a mostly closed door) and disrupt activities in every room of the house (the kitchen is centrally located). It basically sounds like someone is knocking with their knuckles on the side of the fridge.
This unit replaced an old Amana bottom freezer that worked great for over 15 years. I love the bottom freezer. But the noise is intolerable. Given that someone else has already reviewed this unit with the same complaints, it may very well be a design flaw. I'd say avoid this one at all costs.

NOISES OFF, PLEASE!,
By N. Happy (Idaho USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Amana : ABB1921DEW 18.5 Cubic Foot Refrigerator - White
We purchased a brand new Amana refrigerator (bottom freezer) at Christmas 2008. Cost us $1,300.00. Don't you make the same mistake! IT'S NOISY! After the compressor starts, the fridge makes a noisy "popping" sound, like the sound of popcorn popping. It disturbs the peace and quiet of our kitchen and living room. It's just awful. The retail store where we bought it says the noise is normal and we just have to "learn to live with it." I don't think so!
