5.0 out of 5 stars Going from a top loader to an HE front loader~tips!, October 30, 2011
This review is from: Amana 3.5 -Cubic Foot Front Load Washer, NFW7300WW, White (Misc.)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Length:: 0:42 Mins

Previous to getting this machine I had a 12 year old extra large Maytag top loader. It is a whole new world of doing laundry. Here are a few of the differences: You will save 76% on electric bill, 73% less water used. You have to have a 3 prong grounded outlet, you cannot use and two prong converter it will void your warranty. (I called Whirlpool they told me this). you MUST leave the door open all the time (when not in use as mold and bacteria can grow in there as all the water doesn't drain out when the load is done. Once a month you have to run a "cleaning" mode load. It comes with an Afresh tablet and when it is installed they tell you to run that load first. How long it takes to due a load will about double, well for me it does. If you use the heavy or normal load setting it is over an hour. Delicate is about 37 minutes. It is much more noisy than a top loader. The spin cycle it what it loud and it shakes the whole room if on hard wood floors. I was told by Whirlpool to put vinyl squares under the feet to absorb the vibrations. This cut the vibrations about 50%. The machine is balanced and it doesn't vibrate much but everything else in the room was.

The video is so you can hear an actual spin cycle. It's not super quiet but I have adjusted to the new sounds.

Make sure you read the manual before using the washer. There is important information in correct loading and how to add different types of detergents. Also there is a list of how long each type of cycle will run so you can plan around those times. Heavy Duty 1hr 22 min to wash rinse and spin 26 minutes, drain and spin 14 min. Delicate wash time 37 minutes.

Okay now the actual washing. Being my first front loader I watched the first few loads. You need to put small items in a bag to wash as they can get caught in the rubber seal that goes around the opening and even go under that causing a clog. Not a problem I have 3 of them. It gives you instructions on what can go in at a time. You can fill it full but not stuffed. I was able to put what I normally would in my large machine. You must use HE laundry soap. It takes a lot less soap this is a good thing. One thing I loved was nothing came out with white soap residue left on it, no matter what liquid I used in my other machine one or two items would have to be hand rinsed. My first load included sheets and everything came out tangled...I didn't like that. Second load was better and I made it smaller.

No tangled clothes on more loads I have done. Seems just the sheets with a few mixed clothes was the only one to tangle. What I am finding is my items that I do not put in the dryer and hang to dry are not needing ironing some none and others just a bit. I used to have to iron all the air dry things. The borax seems to make this even better.

At first I was missing my old machine but now that I have done a number of loads I am getting used to the differences. If for no other reason the savings on water and electric are reason enough to like it. I have mine in what was a dining room off my kitchen and it is very sharp and modern looking. I have Amana and Whirlpool appliances in there so it fits fight in,

I stated earlier that it is loud when it spins, this is due to the fact it gets much more water out of your clothes so it takes about half the time to dry them. Here is where you make up for the longer washing times. It kinda sounds like a jet engine starting up when it builds to full spin power. It is just a matter of getting used to it. My top loader was really quiet all I really heard was when the tub was filling.

Now on to the monthly cleaning. The installer told me I didn't have to buy the Afresh tablets that bleach would do the same thing. I have been reading reviews about the tablets and about Tide's machine cleaner. A few women talked about 20 mule team Borax. Would not of thought of that. My Mom used that when I was a child. It is natural and will not be harmful to the machine or the earth. It states on the box safe for HE machines. These women said it works better than the bleach and no strong chemical odors. I picked up a 76 ounce box at Krogers under $4.00. So that is the route I plan to take as long as it works.

Update on Borax, have used it with each load and my clothes seem even cleaner and there is no odor whatsoever in the washer. I use unscented detergent but it still has a slight scent with the borax nothing. I am sold now I know why Mother's have trusted it for years.

All things considered I very much like the machine. It is just very different and you might want to be aware that how you do laundry will change, but in the long run for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great High Efficiency Washer! Super Quiet!!!, October 31, 2011
This review is from: Amana 3.5 -Cubic Foot Front Load Washer, NFW7300WW, White (Misc.)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have always had top-loading washers, and I was skeptical of the front loaders, but after this one, I'm thrilled!

Starting with the look, this Amana washer looks like something you'd find on the Starship Enterprise. The front door opens on the right side (swinging open to the left). I don't know if this is a standard, but every house I've been in has the washer hook-up to the left of the dryer hook-up. As a result, the door opens away from the dryer, which allows you to easily move your laundry from washer to dryer without the door getting in the way. Furthermore, this washer is intended to be stackable with its mated dryer. I don't have that dryer, but if you have limited space, this is the solution for you!

The washer has many cycles and options to choose from, and all are entered by pressing a large silver button until the indicator light matches the options you want. It is easy to use and intuitive to control (I ran the first loads without looking at the manual in order to see how intuitive the controls were). Once you press start, the wash begins and the door is locked. This prevents water spillage, but if you are used to a top-loader, you'll have to remember to check your load first. If you find a sock you dropped, it will have to wait for the next load! (There is an "add-a-garment" indicator, but you'll still be standing there waiting, whereas with the top loader you can just throw the item right in.)

On that note, things like socks and stockings are supposed to go in a bag before washing, as they may get stuck in the mechanism. We still wash the socks free-range, and we haven't seen a problem.

Speaking of seeing, that was a concern when we got this. Since most lights are on the ceiling, the top loader was easy to see into and get every item out. I was worried about that with the front-loader, but this one seems to be angled or something, as I can see everything just fine inside. Even if I couldn't, however, I can easily reach in and feel around for little things like socks.

Once you start the load, aside from the lights on the front, you may wonder if it has actually started. This is because the washer is so unbelievably quiet it seems as if it isn't actually running. Even the spin cycle is quiet, although it is the loudest part. With our old washer, we had to pause TV shows in the bedroom during the spin cycle, but not anymore!

It uses so little water, that again, I wondered if it was working right. I know it is a low-energy and water washer, but it is a really low water washer! If you live in a house where no one can flush a toilet while someone is in the shower, like we do, you'll appreciate the fact that the water draw is so meager that it has no effect on the pressure or temperature of the shower!

With the lower water use comes a bit of a cost. Wash cycles take longer than they do with regular top loading washers. I didn't time them side by side, but it takes approximately 10% longer to wash a load in this washer than in my old one. On the other hand, you will make the time up in your drying cycle, since the clothes come out drier than they do in a top loader. Even towels don't come out soaked and dripping.

With all this efficiency and low water usage, I worried about the washer's ability to clean well. Fortunately, that was not the case. Even my sons' lacrosse uniforms came clean (and this was after I made the mistake of running their "man-ball" drills in the one big patch of dirt on the field)!

Now, while I wouldn't categorize this is a "con" in the sense of pros and cons, you might. This washer requires high efficiency washer detergent. You cannot use your regular detergent in this machine, and doing so may void your warranty. The good news is that the high efficiency detergent was available at Wal-Mart, and while it was more expensive, it wasn't much more expensive. The usual detergent was $12, whereas the high efficiency one was $15 for the same size. It is a difference, but if you consider that you will make that back in electric usage and water usage, it works out OK, particularly here in Nevada where water is very expensive!

As the washer finishes its cycle, there is a handy alarm that is easy to hear around the house. This is a great benefit when, as I mentioned before, the washer is so quiet you won't know it is done otherwise!

In the end, this is a fabulous washer! It will save you money and take good care of your clothes! As a bonus, you can sleep through its cycles!
