Book Description

1932043314 978-1932043310 June 2005
The German immigrants who settled the Amana Colonies of Iowa in 1855 brought with them a rich cultural heritage of arts and crafts. That heritage is explored, and celebrated, in this book. This comprehensive title explores everything from clock making, furniture, and woodworking to basketry, caning, and carpet weaving. Full-color photographs by legendary Iowa photographer Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret show the beauty that abounds in Amana, including gorgeous gardens and architecture. Together, the text and photos become their own work of art.

4.0 out of 5 stars The arts and crafts heritage of Iowan German immigrants, March 17, 2006
This review is from: Amana Style: Furniture, Arts, Crafts, Architecture & Gardens (Paperback)
AMANA STYLE: FURNITURE, ARTS, CRAFTS, ARCHITECTURE & GARDENS explores the rich arts and crafts heritage of the German immigrants who settled in the Amana Colonies of Iowa, bringing with them traditions which continue to this day. Many of the buildings and arts have distinctive Germanic roots, and two historians whose ancestors have roots in Amana traditions discuss unique characteristics and features of Amana style, from its tendency to be unsigned and anonymous to how the feel and scope of Amana differs. From willow baskets to youth chairs, Amana's traditions receive a fine blend of history and personal insights.
