An excellent beginning reader (Level 2) with engaging characters,
This review is from: Amanda Pig and the Awful, Scary Monster (Easy-to-Read, Puffin) (Paperback)
My kindergartner has recently discovered the Oliver and Amanda Pig books and loves them all. This book is characterized as a Level Two reader, which is described as "reading together, short sentences, simple dialogue", although my kindergartner was able to read it by herself (until she gets tired, then we switch over to "you read one page, and I'll read the next").
The stories are interesting and engage my daughter's attention. She also loves readers which are illustrated, and this book contains colorful and cute illustrations by Ann Schweninger. Here, Amanda Pig must overcome her fear of the monster in her bedroom at bedtime. Of course, there is no such thing, just a little piglet's active imagination. With the support of her brother Oliver and her parents, Amanda learns to overcome her fears. I'd recommend this series to children who are beginning to develop some measure of independence in their reading and have completed the level one readers. It also makes an excellent read aloud for younger children.

Monster Trap,

This review is from: Amanda Pig and the Awful, Scary Monster (Easy-to-Read, Dial) (Hardcover)
My 8 year old actually enjoyed reading this book to me. Amanda is worried that there is a monster in her room at night. With a little help from her family she gets over it. He especially liked the part about the monster trap. Recommended for ages 5-8 years and K-2nd grade. It is written at a 2nd grade reading level. My library has it recommended as a 1-2nd grade reader.

My two+ year old has spent months carrying this book around, having it read to her a hundred times a day and talking about it. She even sleeps with it. She loves the Amanda Pig! We will definitely work on getting her the entire Amanda Pig series. The BOO SHOOO TO YOU segment seems to really resonate with her and we hear (and say) it quite often. You can't have more fun for less than $5!
