THE NEW QUEEN OF CUMBIA,
By
This review is from: Amandititita (Audio CD)
Who does not remeber 'Selena'? Queen of Tex-Mex and Cumbia...
Well, if there is a heiress to her, it is: Amanda L. Escalante, better known as "Amandititita", who is also Mexican rock royalty. (Her father, "Rockdrigo" González, was Mexico's answer to folk legend Bob Dylan). Her Music a draft of fresh air to this kind of dance music, and it will get deep into your head and will linger there for a long long time. Favoring futuristic cumbia beats, the short and spunky Amandititita is the self-proclaimed "Queen of Anarcumbia" (anarchic cumbia). Like her father, Amandititita uses sarcasm and kitsch to air out the whole idiosyncrasy of Mexico (City). Its ugly side on songs like "La Mataviejitas", a real story of a nurse that killed old ladies for kicks. The unbelievable (Like any Soap Opera) in "Mecánico", a tale of a fresa (snob girl) who falls in love with an old car mechanic. And the economic reality in "La Cumbia de Telmex," which criticizes, Mexican billionaire, Carlos Slim's telephone monopoly, political and playful. Amandititita's biggest hit to date is "Metrosexual", a flirty single about a pretty-boy boy-friend, video of which hit a million views on you tube in a matter of weeks, featuring well-known actor: Miguel Rodarte (El Tigre de Santa Julia) a 'really' handsome Mexican man, not any kind of Metro in reality, this track made her the toast of Latin gossip shows and late night TV programs. Her eponymous debut was produced by Lino Nava of La Lupita. Amandititita says she's confident her father's legacy won't overshadow her music: "The YouTube and MySpace generation didn't know about [Rockdrigo]; I read lots of comments that say they've never heard of him but it doesn't bother me because I also have something to say."

I heard about Amandititita on the Radio once and then I had to buy the CD! Very different from other cumbia CD's, it makes fun of many issues Mexican culture deals with on a daily basis...with a twist, of course LOL
