5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! - Now That's What I Call Great Music June 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I have been a fan of ethnic music around the world for my entire life...but this CD blew me away. The tunes are basically African - with a terrific lead singer who also plays a string kora with a German accompanist playing horn to supplement and enrich the jazz spaces in the background. For those who think they have heard everything, let them listen to this. I plan to set this aside and give the music to my friends for birthdays and other special days. I simply can't say enough how soothing, gloriously lovely, and exciting the music can be....all at the same time. Almost as wonderful is these artists' first album "Sira" - albeit that album is harder to find. I have not found anyone who does not praise these musicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, exotic, soothing... March 3, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
If you want to inject some tranquillity into your day, listening to this music will make that possible. The kora player and singer is completely at one with his art and it shows. The trumpet and flugelhorn artist has added a beautiful warmth with his empathetic and sensitive interplay in a style not intrinsic to his jazz bachground but wonderfully rendered here. My wife listens to this whenever she practices her Japanese calligraphy and she says it puts her in the perfect frame of mind for such an endeavor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts you in a different headspace December 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I downloaded this album after hearing a few tracks of it on the "Hearts of Space" program. If you want to sit back, relax and forget about the day, this is the album for you. It just puts you in a different mindset. I hope they release more albums. You own't be displeased with this one. I highly recommend track 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing Quiet Joy September 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is an album of improvisation and of rich beauty and gentleness. Although a duo, Ablaye Cissoko, the Senegelese kora player and vocalist, is the leader and song composer. The muted trumpet work of Volker Goetze mainly adds contrasting timbre and supports the kora with phrases to emphasize the melodies. He at times does some more extensive riffs. Goetze's other role is music arranger. The distinction of track 4, Silo, is that Goetze opens with a solo improvisation and that percussion is provided by Joe Quitzke; it is the only fast and rhythmic piece. The album is enhanced with a nicely crafted 5-minute video of the tune and country Haiti (hear track 6) that was excerpted from the documentary film Griot. The trumpet is an asset to the album, enriching it with the upper register, highlighting melodic phrases, and breaking any sonic tedium. Listening to the soft vocals and the river of notes from the kora will lighten your spirits and bring quiet joy. My only negative is that, with the exception of track 4, the tone is the same throughout, and if the album were to be extended beyond its 43 minutes, tedium would probably occur. Similar collaborations have been heard before in Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal's Chamber Music and to some extent with Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko's New Ancient Strings, but this album is a sweeter wine.
