Product Description

These luscious and intensely flavorful amarena cherries from the province of Emilia-Romagna are one of the most sought after all over Europe. The Fabbri family has been producing these luxurious wild cherries in syrup since 1905 from the guarded original recipe of founder Gennaro Fabbri. The local wid cherries which are a dark red variety with a sweet and slightly bitter flavor are preserved in a rich syrup made from the juice of the same fruit. Try using these special amarena cherries in place of any dish that requires ordinary candied cherries. You will find no end to using them. Use them for toppings, over pancakes, ice cream, dessert, champagne and even a glass of seltzer.

I first had Amarena Fabbri cherries in Germany in 1992. I was working on my German degree and staying with a host family. In those days, the cherries were only available once a year which meant they had to last. My host mom carefully counted out the cherries on top of ice cream, Kalte Schale, and other cream-based desserts - but only 3-4 cherries per person! She hid the crock in the house so her kids (and I!) wouldn't sneak them. I loved the cherries so much that my host family gave me the beautiful crock as a keepsake, and I still have it today in my china closet. The cherries & syrup are very rich, but not too sweet. Nothing at all like the supersweet-but-sour cherry pie filling we have in America, and not like our dark cherries, either. The syrup is delectable as a topping all by itself, if you want to stretch out your investment.

These cherries are wonderful for all the uses listed in the other reviews but don't forget about using these to add extra class to Manhattans. We have a couple excellent restaurants/bars here in Scottsdale that use these rather than maraschino cherries and now we're hooked. To make them even better than they are when they come out of the jar, remove about half the syrup (save it for other things) and fill with brandy and/or cognac. After a few days you'll have wonderful brandied cherries which can still be used as ice cream topping etc, but again, a must for those Manhattans--even if you make your Manhattan's with whiskey like we do (Crown Royal even better). I will agree with one other reviewer, it's ashame that Amazon continues to sell these for $5 more than Taylors Market which is where they get them from. I thought maybe the price would even out if you compared them after shipping charges, but they're still about $5 different.

I ordered these after tasting a few Amarena Fabbri Wild Cherries while at a DisneyWorld restaurant. Our waiter made such a fuss over these when he described them that we just had to try the dessert. It was one of the best decisions of the day! They were served as a garnish on the side of a nice creamy chocolate dessert, but the taste combination was terrific. They are so unlike marachino red cherries...these are dark burgundy, tart and sweet all at once, in a smooth creamy syrup and a real treat. I can see serving these on top of some vanilla ice cream, on some creamy cheesecake, with chocolate mousse...or just as a treat with a nice peice of dark chocolate. There are soooo many in this jar, that this one will last for quite a while (unless I decide to share them with my friends). I can't even say how happy I am that I treated myself to this splurge!!

These cherries are a little pricey but well worth it. (They're also available I later discovered at Sur La Table and in a smaller-sized red crock at Whole Foods if either of those are near you). The crock itself is truly a work of art and the cherries are excellent for making Manhattans. They would probably also be great in a dessert, e.g. with some vanilla ice cream or on a piece of pound cake. The syrup is a little cloying on its own, especially for use in cocktails, so I poured out about 1/2 of it and replaced with some brandy (and have kept it in the fridge to prevent any spoilage, which might not be necessary in view of the sugar and alcohol in the liquid but I don't think it harms the flavor). With the brandy addition, I think the cherries are now pretty close to perfect.

How good can a cherry possibly be? Well, THIS good!

I wondered if these could really be worth the money, but they most certainly are. They are sweet, they are sour, they are firm, they have a beautifully coloured rich syrup, and they have a wonderful aroma containing exotic overtones of almonds and alcohol, neither of which are actually ingredients.

They are fabulous!

P.S. The jar is extremely handsome (as you see) and I plan to use it for vanilla sugar once the cherries are gone.

There is nothing like these cherries. Yes the cost is extravagant but for something special, they are worth EVERY penny. And the price is a standard price for these.

Very fresh tasting cherries in a beautiful little jar which is much smaller than it looks in the picture. Peek at your canned goods to see how big 21oz is. I save these for very special occasions and use them exclusively for cocktails.

Delicious Topping made with whole sour cherries perfect for ice cream.
Very popular in Italy since I can remember ( I grew up there in the '70's) this topping has been a classic in all ice cream parlors around the country. The quality hasn't changed in the years and as I opened the jar, the familiar smell immediately brought me back to my childhood.
The cherry flavor is strong and the fruits have an appetizing crunch to them. You have to taste it
