5.0 out of 5 stars Another great album from Shinedown March 26, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bringing in their fourth studio album, Amaryllis doesn't disappoint! While I'm not your standard music reviewer, I did want to put a review up for those who are debating getting this album.

While not as strong or hard hitting as their last "Sound of Madness" album, it still contains strong musical rhythms, hard guitar rips, and great vocals. The lyrics for this album also seemed to have a bit more thought than their last few, which gives their overall feel a bit more depth, which is something I definitely appreciate in the music industry today.

All in all, Shinedown continues to show their musical strength and deserving right in the history as a great band. If you've liked their previous work, this album won't through you any surprises.

Bottom line: If you like good harder rock that isn't pushing the borders of metal or screaming obscenities into your eardrums, then Shinedown is a great band to pick up and this album can be a great start. At the end, I highly recommend the album.

Keep it coming Shinedown!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shinedown Continues To Bloom Rapidly June 14, 2012
Format:Audio CD
In the current realm of rock music today, Shinedown blends in perfectly with the radio-rock sound that has been done by Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman. But, unlike those bands, who incorporate lyrics regarding bashing women, mostly evident in TOAD, Shinedown has always written lyrics that are straight from the heart and more poetic. They've never really went too far with their lyrics, and that is a band that I can easily get into.

"Leave a Whisper" is my favorite Shinedown album, hands down. It blended a lot of different styles of rock music together, such as nu-metal, radio rock, and even a little bit of classic rock. "Us and Them" portrayed a softer side of Shinedown, but in no way is this a bad sign. "The Sound of Madness" is what I like to call the band's breakthrough, displaying much more of the radio-rock sound than the previous two records combined.

So, now we're up to "Amaryllis", and while this does not level up to "Leave a Whisper", it's another diverse offering from the band. Shinedown continue to set themselves apart from the several radio rock bands that are dominating the airwaves these days. The songwriting is absolutely flawless and much more thought-provoking than even the best material from LAW. The vocals are improved more than on the previous records. Overall, the album is in fact their most adventurous to date.

Standout tracks on the record are as follows: "Nowhere Kids", "For My Sake", "Adrenaline", "Miracle", "I'll Follow You", lead-off single "Bully" and "Through the Ghost". "Nowhere Kids" is more of a political song, with lyrics such as, "Politicians, in condition dying for a curtain call", and "I know you're hanging onto zeros because you got nothing left.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate current day rock album July 15, 2012
By Brad
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
My rock roots go strongly back to the 1970s and '80s, but I still like to look for favorable rock music in the modern day when time permits. Shinedown is one of those bands that has come out in the past decade that I always anticipate new music from. While it may have taken them four years to get new material out since the epic "The Sound of Madness", it has absolutely been worth the wait. This album is everything I like to hear in a modern day album--walls of guitars, melodies, powerful singing, and variety of tempos. Shinedown accomplishes all of that in this latest epic album. From monster tracks like the opener "Adrenaline" to beautiful heartfelt power ballads like "Unity", the quality is there. Just about every track has energy, attitude, and passion.

As a parent, I enjoy listening to appropriate rock music with my young kids. On this album, "Nowhere Kids" (track 7) and "My Name" (track 11) should probably be skipped with the kids around due to a bit of language--although they are killer tracks that I otherwise recommend. To these ears, in fact, there is not a dud on this album.

I highly recommend this album to rock fans of various generations. I enjoy this album with both my thirty-something wife and my teenage nephew. Excellent, rocking album from beginning to end from a band that has truly hit their stride.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great follow-up to The Sound of Madness! June 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Don't be delicate... be vast and brilliant" says the booklet to Shinedown's fourth album, Amaryllis. And the album does come close to brilliance. A band whose success rides on being accessible for radio and the casual listener, Shinedown have managed to create their own sound without acquiring any rough edges. Sure, there's the unnecessary profanity in "Nowhere Kids" and "My Name (Wearing Me Out)," for example, but the songs themselves are coherent, intelligent, perfectly executed and produced.

Coming after the highly successful album The Sound of Madness and "Diamond Eyes" single, Amaryllis is undeniable evidence that Shinedown have found their niche. Shinedown always had a knack for writing both hard rockers ("Fly from the Inside," "Heroes," etc.) and more emotional songs ("45," "Beyond the Sun," etc.), but now they make great songs consistently with very few missteps. Unlike most modern rock groups, their ballads and mid-tempo songs always have tolerable, if not good, lyrics. The rock songs are always very strong, as well, and everything is carried through by fabulous vocalist Brent Smith.

Shinedown's debut had some great songs, but its weakness was the bleak atmosphere contained throughout. Us and Them shed some light lyrically, and then The Sound of Madness was practically a rebirth. The fabulous sound of The Sound of Madness (partially due to Rob Cavallo, no doubt) remains entirely intact on Amaryllis, and it has been slightly improved. Critics of Shinedown have complained (probably without having heard "Fly from the Inside" or "Lady So Divine") about lack of interesting instrumentals - Amaryllis will likely silence them. Lyrically, the songs are general enough for individual interpretation, with enough emotion and honesty to be interesting and worthwhile.
