Gibilisco is an electronics engineer best known among librarians for his admirable Encyclopedia of Electronics (2d ed., TAB, 1990). This new encyclopedia is intended for ham radio operators and shortwave listeners. However, the work will find a wider audience, including people responsible for school media operations and college broadcasting facilities. Amateur astronomers and laypersons interested in television will also benefit. More than 1,000 entries include helpful definitions and excellent line drawings providing lucid explanations of highly technical information. Topics covered include shortwave listening; antennas and wave propagation; amplifiers, oscillators, and keying systems; power supplies and test equipment; and amateur satellite communications.

The encyclopedia is arranged alphabetically; a complete index and a system of cross-references help users make the most of it. Much of the information provided is also to be found in standard science encyclopedias. These sources, however, do not focus on the needs of laypersons interested in radio, nor do they group information on the subject as effectively. Those preparing for ham operator licenses will especially appreciate the information provided in this encyclopedia, focusing on Morse code abbreviations and slang expressions associated with ham radio operators, with a table of physical conversions included as an appendix. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
