I played for the Mets in the mid-sixties. Bill Ryczek has written a very enjoyable account of the early days of the Mets. It brings back some wonderful memories of the highs and the lows of that period.
I enjoyed the quotes of players and their stories of the New York baseball community.
Most common quote - "I wish I had enjoyed it more when I was there." Thanks for the great book.
Bill Wakefield (or as Yogi and Casey called me -- Dick Wakefield.)

I have an extensive sports library and read every baseball book I can get my hands on. Mr. Ryczek's recap of the Mets' early years is a definite gem. You don't have to be a Mets fan to enjoy this book. If you like 60's era baseball, this tome is certain to tickle your nostalgic fancy. I took nearly a month to read this relatively short book because I wanted to extend the pleasure it evoked rather than gobble it up in the day or two it might well have taken, but it sure was difficult to put it down each night.

This is one of the best sports books I've read in quite a while. Often when a new book comes out on the subject of one of my favorite teams and of a favorite era for that team, I'm all over it even though I've read so many other books on that topic. And often I'm a little disappointed as the book has so little new to offer as its sources are books I've already read. That wasn't the case with this book. The author did plenty of original research for this one as he interviewed so many former Mets. Many of them are not the ones that are typically interviewed. The book was very interesting and well written. The author did a nice job of covering each of the seasons from 1962 through 1969. I highly recommend it to fans of the 1960's Mets.

This is a great book about a subject that isn't written about very often. But before anyone else orders it, be warned: The size of the type on the pages is very small.

When I originally saw this, I thought I wouldn't able to get through it, but being a Mets fan, the subject fascinated me, so I gave it a shot.

I had to read at a slower pace than I usually do, but in the end, it was well worth the patience and effort.

I am anything but a fan of the current Mets, an overpaid group of selfish losers indeed. I resisted ordering this book because of those negative perceptions, but I am glad I finally did. The book is very well written and the unity of the narrative very compelling. The motivations of the founders, of Casey, of Seaver are all very interesting and insightful.
