5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book about an indifferent subject, August 16, 2011
By
Gareth Simon (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Amazing 3-D Comics (Hardcover)
This is a very good book about an indifferent subject, as even the artists who drew the comics attest. 3-D comics were a gimmick - the first issue sold a million, the second, third etc. didn't sell, and publishers went broke as a result. As Joe Kubert says in his Introduction - "Story and storytelling is what is most interesting to an audience. After a while, the fascination of 3-D won't make any difference at all". Mike Esposito, quoted in Craig Yoe's introductory essay - "It was the kiss of death. 3-D destroyed companies... 3-D was a one-shot type thing. People read one and that was it. They didn't want to buy the next one because it was a gimmick."

Joe Kubert's introduction tells how he came up with the idea of 3-D comics and created the first big hit in partnership with Norman Maurer, how the publisher refused to see through the gimmick, and so went bust. Craig Yoe gives us an essay on the history of 3-D comics. Both these are profusely illustrated with 3-D and flat illustrations, and then we get 138 pages of reprints of the original 3-D comics, the last 30 pages of which show the various publishers' (rather successful) attempts to produce `3-D' comics with flat printing, using forced perspectives, colouring tricks etc. There's a splash panel form a `fake' 3-D story from Mad magazine, which will almost show the first panel in 3-D if you reverse the colours in the glasses! The back endpaper is a spectacular 3-D illustration of the attack on Pearl Harbour. The front endpaper is Joe Kubert & Norman Maurer's first 3-D sample that they showed their publisher, which led to the launch of 3-D comics. Among the artefacts illustrated are some DC and Marvel 3-D comics' covers - maybe we will see Archives and Masterworks 3-D Rarities one day.

The comic stories reprinted are from -
3-D Comics #2 - a Kubert Tor story; The Three Stooges #2 - "Men in the Moon" by Norman Maurer; A Stuntgirl story by Kubert; Whack #1 - "3-D-T's" by Kubert; Felix the Cat 3-D Comic Book #1 - a Felix story by Otto Messemer & Joe Oriolo; Animal Fun 3-D #1 - Billy & Buggy Bear by Milton Stein; Sheena Jungle Queen #1; True 3-D #1 - `The Diver', `Brain Power' and `The Duel' by the Bob Powell studio; True 3-D #2 - `Duster Pilot' by Howard Nostrand; Adventures in 3-D #1 - `Three D Blinkey' by the Bob Powell Studio (where they use each colour/lens to show an opposing point of view in the story), `Forbidden Depths' by Howard Nostrand; Adventures in 3-D #2 - `Il Maestro' by Bob Powell, `First Man in the Moon' by the Bob Powell Studio; Jiggs and Maggie #26 - artist unknown; Adventures into the Unknown #54 - `Dry Death' by Harry Lazarus (non-3d colour section starts here); Crime and Punishment #66 - `The Burner' by Alex Toth; Tim Holt #40 - `Sixguns of Skullhead' by Frank Bolle; Whack #2 - `The 3-D-T's' by Kubert & Maurer, now sending themselves and the 3-D fad up.

The cover is a 3-D hologram panel of a caveman (Tor?) running from a T-Rex, drawn by Joe Kubert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on 3-D ever., August 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Amazing 3-D Comics (Hardcover)
I lived through the 3-D comic book craze of the early 1950s as Joe Kubert developed the process for St. John. One of the happiest moments my
father and I shared was when he brought home an advance copy of the first 3-D comic, Mighty Mouse, for me. After that I bought them all as they came out (and still have them) but never have I seen the art and 3-D look as fantastic as it does in Craig Yoe's new book. My son inherited my love of 3-D and now does 3-D and CGI as a supervisor at Dreamworks on the Kung Fu Panda and Monsters Vs Aliens movies. Do yourself a favor and get this book. It captures an age and time that will never come again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth seeing, August 24, 2011
This review is from: Amazing 3-D Comics (Hardcover)
There is much to enjoy here in this new book. But I have three small disappointments. [1] This book repeated some stories (Tor, 3-D-Ts, Hidden Depths) that have appeared in Amazing 3-D by Hal Morgan and Dan Symmes (1982) at pg. 106-153. It's better to reprint rare comics that are not already available in any other books. [2] The stories at this book's end are not stereoscopic at all (in fact, it says "please remove your 3-D glasses"), and a waste of pages which would have been better reserved for real 3-D.

[3] There are distracting colored page numbers placed besides the 3-D panels. Maybe they were put there for design chic, but they subtly interfered with my involvement in the stories. (I whited them out, as there is no real need for page numbers in that section anyways, with no table of contents.)

Still, it's a book well worth seeing. I most liked the 3 Stooges, Stunt Girl, and The Diver.
