Mostly 2004 Campaign Ad,
By Steve Bennett "stevebenett" (VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An Amazing Adventure: Joe and Hadassah's Personal Notes on the 2000 Campaign (Hardcover)
It's a light, quick, fluff read. If you liked Gore/Lieberman in 2000 you'll like the book. Lieberman falls all over himself emphasizing his religion while feigning shock that it could be an issue. He also sidesteps any criticism from fellow Jews that his positions are decidedly unorthodox. He emphasizes that everywhere his wife ever went and everyone she ever spoke to always loved her. If something went wrong in the campaign, it was because he didn't follow through with his instincts. He even quoted an editorial where someone said that Lieberman can make an attack not feel like an attack. Hardball politico, but with a smile.

One cannot possibly read this book and not develop a greater appreciation for the sacrifices, courage, determination and faith that the Liebermans made throughout the campaign and throughout their lives.
Not only is this a "biography" but it is also an excellent book on the political process, namely the campaign process. Throughout the book, the reader becomes acutely aware of the amount of work, energy and choregraphing a national campaign requires.

Book helps clarify Leiberman's split personality,

This review is from: An Amazing Adventure: Joe and Hadassah's Personal Notes on the 2000 Campaign (Paperback)
The millions of voters on both sides who have watched in bewilderment as Lieberman inexplicably swung wildly from left to right over the last decade will discover in this book what drives this old die-hard political opportunist. Lieberman openly discusses how his blind ambition and utter lack of principals led him to grab on to the coat-tails of Gore in 2000 and to heap insincere praise on Barack Obama at the 2004 convention when he incorrectly calculated that the Democrats would beat Bush.
After witnessing the impressive efforts of Carl Rove and the Bush team in both elections, Lieberman then incorrectly concluded that the Republicans would remain in power forever. He felt he had a sure shot at a cabinet position in 2008 if he just put on a big show of patriotism by expressing unequivocal support for the war. He describes how his lack of any real loyalty to either party allows him to praise Obama and the Democrats in one campaign, and then denounce them in the next campaign while hailing McCain and the Republicans. The people of Connecticut are fortunate to have a Senator whose core beliefs are so flexible and who is open to change everything he stands for every four years.

Another great installment!,
This review is from: An Amazing Adventure: Joe and Hadassah's Personal Notes on the 2000 Campaign (Hardcover)
The writing is straightforward and the story is fast-paced. The book furnished me with a far greater appreciation than I had of the difficulty and complexity of conducting a national campaign and of the demands made upon the candidates and the many workers, mostly volunteers, who surround and assist them. The personality and character of the narrators comes through quite clearly and with considerable honesty and self-knowledge (although I must add that Mrs. Lieberman's insights are often the more interesting ones). The narrative makes clear that these are real human beings with real children and parents and problems. When their lives are stirred into the soup of arguably our most chaotic Presidential campaign, a very interesting tale emerges.

To those of us who are fascinated by the political process, this book affords an opportunity to experience, through a series of real-time and intimate descriptions, what it would be like to be cast almost without warning onto a national stage on opening night. While the Liebermans are hardly newcomers to the world of politics, the level of international focus that followed Sen. Lieberman's selection as the Vice Presidential candidate and his subsequent immersion in the Gore campaign was unlike anything that he could possibly have experienced before. And, for Mrs. Lieberman, whose background and history proved inspirational to many, this was a wholly new experience. The writing is straightforward and the story is fast-paced. The Liebermans amazing adventure also becomes an amazing one for the person reading this book! Written in the similar format of "he says, she says" or James Carville & Mary Matalin's "All's Fair" book, Joe and Hadassah Lieberman share their thoughts, feelings and experiences on the campaign 2000 trail. Reading intimate details, insofar as Senator Lieberman's contemplations regarding how to remain true to his own ideals of his religion and political convictions and Hadassah's contemplations regarding her life experiences - especially having been raised by parents who are survivors of the holocaust, is incredibly inspiring! One cannot possibly read this book and not develop a greater appreciation for the sacrifices, courage, determination and faith that the Liebermans made throughout the campaign and throughout their lives. Not only is this a "biography" but it is also an excellent book on the political process, namely the campaign process. I highly recommend it!

In the last election, I did not know much about Joe Lieberman and that is because I did not give my self the opportunity to do so. When this book first came out, I scoffed at it, because it looked so "light" and yet after reading it I was taken aback, not only on what an interesting look it is into a presidential campaign, but also into the man himself. Suffice it to say I agree with much of the man's politics, but that non-withstanding, this book was an interesting look at a family who lives their faith while working on the campain trail. It was touching as well as eye-opening. In addition this book was able to tell its tale without totally stomping on the opposing party. It was obviously written by a man with good character and ethics. Perhaps it was released to coinside with his run for the presidency, but it has made me take a second look at this man and boy am I impressed! |
