Not what you think, March 13, 2008
This review is from: The Amazing Adventures of Letitia Carberry (Paperback)
Both the title and date conspire to give the idea that Tish is a old-fashioned little posy that our great-grandmothers would have chuckled over. Actually these books are unexpectedly fresh. I can't describe them beyond saying that they concern three middle-aged ladies who think nothing of speeding, hijacking, robbery, race-fixing, boiling mountain lions, and attempted murder in the interest of justice or true love, all the while retaining membership in the Temperance League and the church. (Whose minister, Mr. Ostermeier, they rescue from bandits in the Rocky Mountains, in spite of the fact that his wife wears showy earrings.)
Roberts lacks the precision of someone like PG Wodehouse and the plots can ramble a little. But if you like comic novels these are well worth reading.
(If you're feeling cheap, you can read the first two Tish novels for free on Google Books.)
And look the Indian who sells encyclopedias and reads Nietszche.
