I started to read the manga <Amazing Agent Luna, and really enjoyed it's mix of coming of age story, slice of life tales, and action. I heard that the creators of Luna recently made a prequel series focused on the woman who would grow up to be Luna's "Control", and telling the story of how she joined the super-secret Agency in the first place. I decided to pick it up and give it a try. Originally a web comic, the series has now been collected and released in graphic novel format.

The story, Amazing Agent Jennifer, Vol. 1, begins with a young woman, Jennifer Kajiwara, who is of mixed Japanese and American ancestry, entering college. Her father is an extremely controlling man, and truly gets emotionally and verbally abusive at times, who wants her to take the courses he states she ought to take, or else he won't pay for college.

The thing is that he can't be pleased. Jennifer takes all of the courses that her father mandates for her, as well as other courses she is interested in taking, all the while maintaining a near-perfect GPA. Despite this, her father tries to force her to drop her other courses by threatening to withdraw his funding for her. It at this time that an agent of a shadowy black-ops agency of the US government approaches her about paying for her tuition, room, and board if she agrees to train for a "potential" (not at all guaranteed) slot as an agent.

This story was the beginning of the adventures for Jennifer, and focused more on her training and school days. It directly sets up the first mission of Jennifer and her love interest. It also sets up the antagonists for the earlier written, and later chronologically, Amazing Agent Luna series.
