5.0 out of 5 stars The Best All-Around Glue, October 3, 2007
By
This review is from: Amazing Goop All-Purpose Household Goop, 3.7-Ounce Tube #130012 (Health and Beauty)
This is the best all-around glue there is. I even prefer it over the over-rated Gorilla Glue. Household Goop works for porous & non-porous surfaces. It does not foam like Gorilla Glue, and dries faster. The success of Household Goop is its perfect blend of hardness with just enough elasticity & flexibility to withstand mechanical vibration. Household Goop is also very durable under extreme heat, cold, and ultraviolet rays. If you use just a small amount on a smooth glass or metal surface, it is removable, as it peels off like hard rubber...perfect for securing precious knick-knacks on the shelves. Household Goop is, in my opinion, the same glue as Welder contact adhesive glue. Like duct tape, Household Goop is a must for the household.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does the Job, July 1, 2011
This review is from: Amazing Goop All-Purpose Household Goop, 3.7-Ounce Tube #130012 (Health and Beauty)
There is a large family of Goop adhesives, "All Purpose", "Automotive", "Craft", "Household", "Lawn and Garden", "Marine", "Plumbing", "RV", "Sport and Outdoor", and "Wood and Furniture" As far as I can tell, all are identical. So, I suggest buying the cheapest. In the local hardware store, "Household Goop" is usually the cheapest. At the time of this writing, "Plumbing Goop" is the cheapest on Amazon.

IN GENERAL
Goop will bond virtually any material, including leather, plastics, glass, and metal. The bond is clear, very strong, waterproof, and hard but flexible.

EXAMPLES
Examples are endless. In addition to the examples below, I've used it to repair ceramic plant pots and shoes. I also use it to seal rust spots on my dishwasher rack. The Goop it also makes a "cushioned" surface that will prevent scratches to dishes. I use Goop to close small holes in window screens. I've used Goop to seal holes in air-mattresses.

ELECTRICAL
Goop is far superior to electrical tape for splicing wires, re-insulating cat-chewed wires, waterproofing and vibration-proofing electrical connections. There is a black variety of "Shoe Goop" if you want your repair to be less noticeable.

PLUMBING
Goop is great for sealing small leaks (including garden hose connections, etc.). However, you have to turn off the water, and the connections must be absolutely dry. Moreover, it takes several days for Goop to dry to reasonable strength. If you turn on the pressure before then you will make a water balloon. It's better to wait a week. Moreover, it may take several applications to get a thick enough layer of Goop to hold against normal household pressure--so a sink, toilet, etc. may be out-of-commission for at least three days waiting for the Goop to dry.

SHORTCOMINGS
1) An opened tube thickens quickly. Store open tubes in a small glass jar with a tight metal lid. Old thick Goop does not work well for some uses (such as repairing shoes), but is perfect when you need a thick application--such as insulating an exposed electrical connection or to hold pressure in a leaking water line. It is best to start with a thin layer from a new tube to maximally bond to the surface

2) Until it dries, Goop flows, alot. Therefore a thickly-applied layer may dry to a very thin layer (because most of the glue has flowed somewhere else). So, it may be essential to apply several thin layers (at intervals of 4 hours or longer) rather than one thick layer. Alternatively, you can apply a thicker layer of old thick Goop over an initial layer of new Goop. If possible, arrange the pieces you are gluing to minimize flowing, i.e., usually horizontal. For several hours, depending on the temperature etc., the glue is "repositionable" after thickening a little, that is, you can push it back into place. Unfortunately, if you use too many layers or "reposition" the glue too much, the result is not as attractive.

3) Except when still tacky (when it can be removed with naptha or acetone), Goop is essentially non-cleanup-able. So, for example, while it might be terrific for fixing a leaking windshield, if you mess up and your application is ugly, there is essentially nothing you can do about it. Although Goop is terrific for repairing a broken ceramic statuette--if a little extra oozes out, there is no way to clean it up the excess. You could simply peel/rub-off excess silicon glue. You could simply wipe off "white glue" and clean up with a moist paper towel.

4) The fumes are strong and toxic. Allow glued items to dry in a well-ventilated area (ideally out-of-door) for several days. When doing alot of gluing, I work in my carport with a large utility fan blowing the fumes away---and still usually get a nasty headache. It is best to use gloves when working with Goop.

TO GOOP OR NOT TO GOOP
While Goop is truly miraculous--there are situations when other types of glue are better choices.

White Glue: For most light-duty indoor household applications which do not have to be waterproof, ordinary household white glue is much safer, cleanup is much easier, and in most cases repairs are redo-able if you make a mistake. For example: Elmer's All Multipurpose White Glue, 7 5/8 oz. (E379)

Wood Glue: Carpenters's wood glue is essentially water-proof (when dry) white household glue. It is much better than Goop for most wood repairs. It penetrates and strengthens the wood. It is much safer, and cleanup is much easier. If the joint breaks again (because the wood is weak), it can be re-glued. For example: Elmer's E701 Carpenter's Wood Glue 8-Ounce

Silicon Glue: Silicon glue is best for glass, and when you want a truly flexible connection (for example, to absorb vibrations). It is a better choice for general household use on glass, plastic, and metal when you do not need the maximum possible strength. It is safer than Goop, and cleanup is easier. Like Goop, silicon glue takes days to reach reasonable strength, weeks to reach maximum strength. For example: GE Silicone II Household Glue, 2.8 oz

Epoxy: When you need a strong rigid workable (e.g. sandable surface) adhesive, particularly for use on metal or hard plastic, epoxy is a much
better choice. For joining metal "J&B Weld" epoxy is best. Most epoxies dry with little running or shrinkage, and so are good for filling gaps. Fiberglass epoxy is best for joining/filling hard plastic. Epoxies are safer than Goop, and cure much quicker. The major drawback to epoxies is that they consist of two parts (resin and hardener) which must be mixed in small batches, and then applied with your own applicator (e.g., a toothpick). Some are packaged in a dual-syringe---but that is not an adequate solution, because the components must still be manually mixed in order harden to maximum strength. Previously, a major drawback was that all epoxies were colored (usually white)---but now clear epoxies are available. For example: J-B Weld 8265-S Cold Weld CLEARBOND H-3S Clear Strong Epoxy Adhesive Syringe - .85oz

Super-Glue (Krazy Glue): Super-glue is very strong, rigid, and fast. In many ways it is similar to 2-minute epoxy---except that no mixing is required. Although very hard, super-glue is brittle, and so, is not recommended for flexible objects. Super-glue is hazardous in that it can easily glue fingers (etc.) together. Previously, I used super-glue frequently on objects (e.g., jewelry) when a clear bond was required---however, Goop is better for such applications, and clear epoxies have become available. Opened super-glue keeps poorly, even in tighly sealed glass containers---so I recommended packages of multiple very small tubes. BAZIC Super Glue, 3 grams 0.10 ounces, 6 Per PackKrazy Glue KG92548R Instant Krazy Glue All Purpose Brush 0.18-Ounce

APPLICATOR TIP
If you use the applicator tip, and do not use the entire tube at one time, much unused glue remains in the tip, which is wasted and clogs up the tip. If you plan to use the glue again within about a week, then jam an old unused (uncut) applicator tip over the one on the tube, and store in a small glass jar with a tight lid. If you aren't likely to do more gluing within two weeks, remove the tip and put the cap back on (and store the tube in a small jar with a tight lid) If it is necessary to clean out an applicator tip, then take it off the tube, let the glue dry for several days, then pull it out with tweezers.

CONCLUSION
Goop is one of those "miracle" products with a thousands uses, which needs to be a permanent part of any household. Other such items include silicon grease Permatex 22058 Dielectric Tune-up Grease - 3 oz. painter's tape ScotchBlue Painter's Tape 2090-1E2, 1 Inch by 60 Yards, 1 Roll, and WD-40. WD-40 Spray Lubricant - 16-oz.

This is THE STUFF YOU NEED. I have used this to glue everything from air mattress to swimming pool to knick knacks and even a water hose. You will not be disappointed in my opinion. This stuff is like liquid plastic that sets up and sticks to anything. Great product, couldn't recommend this highly enough, I love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best general purpose and unsurpassed for most, December 27, 2011
This review is from: Amazing Goop All-Purpose Household Goop, 3.7-Ounce Tube #130012 (Health and Beauty)
If there were to be only ONE glue in my cabinet, it would be Goop (plus a small container of toluene). Goop can be diluted with toluene. I put some in a small jar, like a rubber cement container with brush, and add a very little toluene. Must not be runny.

A few uses:
1) Attaching mailbox to post. Using full strength and being sure that the weather is dry, apply a layer to the horizontal arm of the post and set the box atop. Be sure the box and post are in full contact. May take a little metalwork with pliers. I've had mine up for three years now and vandals have repeatedly tried to destroy the box but it's still there.
2) Full strength or slightly diluted with toluene, repair broken wooden furniture. If a hole is to be filled with a dowel, full strength probably best, if flat surfaces joined, slight dilution allows easier positioning and penetration. Excesses can be wiped off with paper towel or rag (and toluene).
3) Being cheap, I keep my clothing beyond the point that it's wearable and do a lot of patching. Here, the less Goop, the thinner the layer, the better it is to be flexible. If a THIN layer can be applied and the matching patch pressed and held into place before any hardening occurs, the better; maybe do this an inch or two at a time. Alternatively, LIGHTLY brush slightly diluted Goop and place, but do not press, patch. Pressing diluted Goop will spread the Goop into the fabric making it stiff and there'll be little surface adhesion. Also use for installing new pockets, attaching tool holders to work clothes, fixing frayed cuffs. Wherever a needle and thread or awl and lacing is used. However, it will soften and dissolve with oil contact and eventually age and loosen with washings.
4) As a paper cement where durability and permanence are required. How about books and manuscripts.
5) Permanent attachment of cabinets, pictures, moulding, etc., to walls or ceilings where nails or screws won't work. But be careful; this is permanent.

Three ways to keep Goop fresh in the tube: 1) Store upside-down in a well sealed narrow jar with a little toluene; 2) Before screwing on the tube top, place a 1 inch square cut from a cheap plastic grocery bag on the end. Not only does this help seal in the solvent but it makes the top slipperier to get off the next time; 3) Before putting on the top, with something like a cheap ballpoint pen top dig a small hole in the Goop and put in a few drops of toluene. You might try any combination of the above, but the plastic grocery bag trick always helps remove a stuck on top.

These are MY experiences only. I do not recommend them for anyone else. It is up to the reader to evaluate each for his own use and under his own conditions to determine which, if any, are suitable. Good Gooping

3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly good for some uses, not for others, July 27, 2011

This review is from: Amazing Goop All-Purpose Household Goop, 3.7-Ounce Tube #130012 (Health and Beauty)
I used goop to repair a shoe box full of broken shower curtain rings with plaster flowers attached. One of the flowers had broken in half. Two of the metal rings had broken off of the flowers, and in one case the metal loop had separated from the metal base, so that I was left with something resembling a small hook and a "dime" attached to the flower with no groove to hold it.

So I glued them back up with Goop, expecting that they would not hold. I left them for 24 hours. But I was surprised because they looked and felt new. I could not even tell that the rings had ever broken. The shower curtain rings also lasted for six months of continual use until one broke (the one where the metal had broken without a grove) when someone yanked the curtain quite hard. I will glue that piece back and I am sure they will be just fine again.

That being said, I have had some pretty basic projects where Goop did not work, although frankly I did not always expect it to. I tried to fix a small piece of plastic that had broken off of a speed control panel of a Kitchenaid mixer. The plastic was under pressure so a piece on the top broke. I reattached it with Goop but it is very unlikely that it will withstand the constant tension, so I had to go ahead and buy a replacement part.

A word of advice: Do not use goop for little crafts like buttons, ribbons, etc. Apparently it is pretty toxic. Use something like a hot glue gun instead. Goop smells and it is better for "fix up stuff around the house" stuff. That being said, the smell does go away.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stinky!!, January 26, 2011
This review is from: Amazing Goop All-Purpose Household Goop, 3.7-Ounce Tube #130012 (Health and Beauty)
I really like to way it holds. BUT--the smell is horrible. I had a project of decorating a tote bag for a friend, but the smell is atrocious. I have had it airing out in my garage for three days and the smell is still horrible. I hope it fades after a bit, otherwise the bag will be useless. The glue does very good at holding; ribbons, feathers, buttons, etc. Like the glue, but hate the lingering odor.

This review is from: Amazing Goop All-Purpose Household Goop, 3.7-Ounce Tube #130012 (Health and Beauty)
I discovered Amazing Goop years ago, and will never be without it. I even used it on a leaky faucet. As you know, water will find a way, and this glue totally fixed the problem. Dries fast and creates a complete seal on any surface.I used small globs of it on all corners of my cutting board to make it non slip. Worked like a charm! As strong as it is, it will peel right off as well when fully hardened. A wonderful product that every household should never be without.

Whatever you do, don't throw away the package with the instructions. If you are at all like me and don't remember what you read six months ago, you cannot use this glue a second time. The majority of the tube has a different language. Oh, and the tube states, "Read complete directions on package". Useless.
