A great book at several levels. On the surface, it's a picture book of babies with really amazing insights. Below that, a book that might be titled "don't believe everything you read about parenting". Below that is a book about human nature, its origins, diversity and common threads. Below the story of origins is a story about lost traits, such as neonatal swimming, and the accidents of evolution. Morris is so subtle that it is easy to overlook his many layers of meaning.

This beautiful book is informative and fascinating. The information it provides on newborn development is superb, covering the first two years of life. Written from the newborn's perspective, the book celebrates the miracle of human life and growth. The presentation is clear and well-organized. Though I bought it for myself, it would make a great gift for new parents.

Although I bought this book for myself, it would make a lovely baby gift! I have a three month old son, and a four year old daughter, and I found this book beautiful and informative! The photographs are lovely, especially to the eyes of a new parent who is falling in love with their own baby. The overlays of internal body structures (skeleton, eyes, etc) are fascinating. And in between feedings, baths, rocking and playing, I am also enjoying the amazing story of how a baby grows -- wonderful!

... and do it in an easy to read light yet full book. The photos are great and worthy of awards, and the content is deep/provocative for any parent to help train their eye on their newborn and toddler. Lots of books out there, this was in my osteopathic dr's office and I bought it while waiting for her. I NEVER do that with anything.

This book is perfect for major milestones. Photos really bring the text to life. I will keep this book around well after baby grows. I love it so much im giving as a gift.

As a developmental psychologist, I was fascinated by this book. I gave it as a gift to new parents, jokingly suggesting that it was an "owner's manual" for their new baby.

Taking the perspective of the infant herself, the author covers the significant developmental aspects from conception through the child's second year.

Beautiful photographs and an insight-filled text convey a sense of awe and wonderment as new life unfolds and-- if all goes well-- flourishes. It is a refreshing contrast to the fact-filled, how-to books which present normal guidelines of development, implying that the new parent is responsible for fulfilling certain expectation.

For Mr. Morris, development is not a series of goals, but rather an exciting, dynamic, highly individualised process. The parent is enticed to intimately observe and join in to facilitate the baby's growth.

By experiencing individuality "in the making," the parent becomes an observer/participant. Looking through the eyes of the infant, she learns about what is distinctive about being human.

The author's passion for the subject is akin to what the new parent experiences. Altogether, this is a validating, happy book which I'd highly recommend.

A beautiful, intelligent book about an infants development the first year. It's based on Desmond Morris research into our human behavior.

We purchased this new Desmond Morris Book as Christmas presents for two new mothers.
But of them have nothing bud accolades for this book. Have read many books by Desmond Morris ~ even as a grandmother, will probably end up reading this one too.
