Grade 2-5-- Two series entries that are sure to attract nature lovers. Each double-page spread offers an excellent central photograph surrounded by small full-color drawings that illustrate the information about habits and characteristics of a particular species. Naturalistic drawings of children are used to convey scale and silly watercolor cartoons add a bit of humor. Amazing Bears sticks mostly to nine bears and pandas, with one spread on communication. Controversy on the inclusion of the giant and red pandas in this animal family is barely touched upon, and some children may be confused by the statement that the red panda may be a raccoon. Surprisingly, that is the species featured on the front and back spreads. Amazing Birds of Prey is the more successful offering here. Nine birds of prey are covered, but there are also general spreads on flight, food, falconry, and raising young. These books appear in both hardcover and paperback, with the former losing too much of the center illustrations in the gutter. For light, anecdotal entertainment, they will suffice.
