5.0 out of 5 stars This book IS amazing!, June 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Amazing Earth Model Book (Grades 3-6) (Paperback)
Topics for the models are volcanoes, rocks and fossils, weathering and erosion, water, earthquakes, and plate techtonics. Included in the book are patterns and detailed instructions for making each of the model activities described in the book. There are also illustrations to show how the finished product should look. Extention activities are also included. The models and extention activities are a great way to present the various concepts in a visual way that is more meaningful than reading about the concepts in a book. While the book claims to be geared towards grades 3-6, I believe that it can even be used in high school. My students really enjoy making the models, and they say that they learn a lot more from them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Hands-on Approach to Learning!, June 30, 2000
This review is from: The Amazing Earth Model Book (Grades 3-6) (Paperback)
I used many of the models in this book with my sixth graders this year, and they loved them. It is a great way for students to remember concepts that otherwise can be a little "dry". The models use simple materials and do not take a great deal of preparation. Although this book is targeted toward 3rd-6th graders, many of the activities can effectively be integrated for use in the higher grades. I will be using several of them for 8th graders this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, August 25, 2007
This review is from: The Amazing Earth Model Book (Grades 3-6) (Paperback)
This book is just an amazing treasure of hands on activities. While I definitely agree with those who say it can be used with higher grades, I mostly use it with my second year students in our Montessori elementary school because that is the year we teach earth science. Having the models allows the children to begin to grasp the concepts being presented. We have fun using the paper blocks to learn what happens in an earthquake, what an epicenter is and what kind of destruction can be caused. We use the Catch the Wave materials to learn about the different types of earthquake waves and what kind of damage they make. We use the Make a Mountain lesson to learn how the Himalayan mountains were created when the Indian tectonic plate slammed into the Asian plate. With my third year students studying the timeline of life we make the Fossil Timeline. The chapters in the book are Volcanoes, Rocks & Fossils, Weathering, Water & Erosion, Earthquakes, and Moving Plates. This book seems difficult to come by so I highly recommend purchasing a copy whenever you find it at a reasonable price.
