Gr. 4-7. The large-format books in the Story of Flight series present a number of individual topics on separate double-page spreads comprising segmented text in several sizes of type placed around color photos and paintings. Many sidebars extend the information. Spotlighting aspects of flying during the two decades following World War I, Amazing Flights presents topics such as barnstormers, Charles Lindbergh, and famous airwomen. Amelia Earhart is mentioned, and indicative of the series' worldwide scope, England's Amy Johnson is featured just as prominently. Modern Military Aircraft considers the period following World War II, introducing topics such as spy flights during the cold war, "new generation" fighter jets from the 1970s and 1980s, and pilotless aircraft. The pictures of planes in action, sometimes dramatic, will attract young people with an interest in the military. However, the text seems secondary to the pictures, and the coverage is broader than it is deep. Carolyn Phelan
