Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-4-This oversize, heavy board book has foldout pages that reveal large realistic illustrations of dinosaurs when open, and an assortment of pertinent facts/factoids when closed. While hefty, it contains a mere seven Jurassic/Cretaceous creatures, ranging in size from the modest Euoplocephalus through the larger Corythosaurus to the truly huge Barosaurus. The snippets of data on the folded flaps include physical information, global location maps, diet, an introduction to the paleontologist who first discovered each dino (complete with picture), and an introductory paragraph. This will be a sure hit with young dinophiles (older kids may want a bit more data), but be prepared (be very prepared) to use lots of reinforcing tape on the folds and the binding.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NYα(c) Copyright 2011. I just borrowed this book from the library on a whim. I didn't realize it was published just 3 months ago. It is really sturdy for grabby little boys to flip through. I think there were only 5 or 6 dinosaurs covered, which is why I only rated it 4 stars. It may have made the book to thick to cover more, but that was dissapointing. Great pictures and facts.

If you are looking for a comprehensive book on dinosaurs, this isn't it. It only covers seven giant dinosaurs from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, i.e. Barosaurus, Giganotosaurus, Stegosaurus, Corythosaurus, Suchomimus, Euoplocephalus, and Pentaceratops. The book is in large hardcover format and is quite sturdily built so that it holds up to repeated manhandling. For each dinosaur, there are three pages devoted to describing the habitat, eating habits, and a feature called "Dino File" which provides basic info like what group it belonged to, the length, neck length, weight, timeline, origin of its name, and the person who discovered its skeletal remains. There is also a large fold out depicting an illustration of the dinosaur which is quite impressive.

Visual learners will love this book despite its brevity. I wish they had included more dinosaurs to make it more cost effective. In terms of information provided, I felt it was more a summary of main points than a thorough exploration of each dinosaur. Depending on what you're looking for, this might or might not suit your needs. My eight-year-old daughter loved it because she likes information that is organized in a visually pleasing layout and also brief (so that she can retain the info better).

Amazing Giant Dinosaurs' cover does not convey the interior's generally confusing and schizophrenic layout of material.

The content is solid as is the case with DK books typically.

The Flaps, and there are many, don't have the "reveal" factor we have grown accustom to with story books for kids of a similar age.

The 9 year old has little interest in this but the 4 year old loves it for short periods of time. With no clear "path" (for lack of a better word) he just flips back and forth between pages willy nilly.

DK has better.

I have a second grader, a kindergartener whom I taught to read before he started school, and a preschooler, all boys. The librarian saved this book for us when it came in because she knew my youngest would like it. She was right. Both the two younger ones love it. We check it out about once a month. It is by far their favorite dinosaur book. My second grader even looks at it occasionally. It doesn't cover lots of different dinosaurs, but it does have lots of interesting info on the ones it does cover (some of which I had never heard of before); and the pictures are great.
